The Role

As a Senior Product Designer on the Point of Sale team, you will help define world-class restaurant technology, shaping the experiences that thousands of servers, bartenders, and front-of-house staff rely on daily. Your mission is to raise the bar for speed, trust, and usability at the most critical touchpoint in the restaurant. Working within the POS team, you will bring both strategic vision and hands-on craft to Toast’s most complex and high-impact design challenges. You’ll partner with research, product, and engineering to deeply understand restaurant workflows, drive design direction across the platform, and contribute to growing the quality and ambition of the work around you. You'll immerse yourself in the fast-paced reality of restaurant operations to ensure every design decision is grounded in real-world needs.

A Day in the Life (Responsibilities)

• Lead end-to-end design for Point of Sale experiences at a platform level, driving direction from early discovery through polished execution with significant autonomy and strategic influence.
• Define how complex operational workflows — order taking, modifications, payments, table management, and beyond — should function across Toast’s terminal and handheld surfaces, setting a high standard for the entire team.
• Apply a systems mindset to the POS platform: identify patterns, build scalable solutions, and actively contribute to and evolve the Toast design system.
• Partner with Product and Engineering leadership to shape roadmap direction, identify design risks early, and advocate for the user in prioritization decisions.
• Design for the realities of restaurant service — high-pressure, time-sensitive, hardware-constrained — and set the standard for reliable, trustworthy front-of-house software.
• Make work visible early and often, using prototypes, systems thinking, and clear storytelling to drive alignment and influence product direction among senior cross-functional stakeholders.
• Mentor and develop designers on the team, enhancing the collective quality of process, craft, and judgment.
• Champion the server and front-of-house perspective at every organizational level, ensuring speed, clarity, and reliability remain non-negotiable design principles.
• Integrate emerging AI-first tools and methods into your practice and help the broader team adopt them.

What You’ll Need to Thrive (Requirements)

• A proven track record of driving measurable design impact, with examples of decisions that changed outcomes beyond just shipped deliverables.
• An exceptionally high bar for design excellence, demonstrated through a portfolio showcasing mastery of complex, real-world systems with meticulous attention to detail, edge cases, and long-term scalability.
• Natural cross-functional leadership skills, with the ability to build trust with product, engineering, and research peers, and influence direction without direct authority.
• Excellence in operating across multiple levels simultaneously — strategically zooming out while meticulously zooming in on details.
• Deep instincts for designing speed and reliability into products, understanding that even a half-second matters in fast-paced front-of-house environments.
• An AI-first design approach for rapid conceptual prototyping, coupled with strong visual design skills to create polished, intuitive end-to-end journeys across various surfaces and contexts.
• A role as a mentor and force multiplier, elevating the design work around you.
• 5+ years in product design, with clear progression from individual execution to owning product strategy and influencing organization-wide design direction.

Zone A Salary Range: $159,000—$254,000 USD
Zone B Salary Range: $138,000—$221,000 USD
Zone C Salary Range: $125,000—$200,000 USD
