Job Description

The Engineer in Training (EIT) will be responsible for assisting with a variety of Civil and/or Structural Engineering projects focused on transportation and civil site design in both rural and urban Alaska. This may also include assisting with field oversight of various civil engineering projects.

Responsibilities

  • Work on diverse Civil and/or Structural Engineering projects, primarily focusing on infrastructure and civil site development for rural and urban environments, tailored to individual experience and project needs.
  • Apply standard engineering techniques, standards, and criteria.
  • Utilize engineering judgment and make minor adaptations as necessary for task completion.
  • Under direct supervision, perform or assist in studies, calculations, designs, and the preparation of reports, plans, and specifications.
  • Conduct construction inspection and documentation duties for roadway or civil site construction projects.
  • Develop drawings and models using platforms such as AutoCAD, Civil3D, Revit, and RISA, under the guidance of a professional engineer.
  • This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
  • Other duties pertinent to the department or unit's success may be assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering and EIT (FE) certification is desired.
  • Experience using AutoCAD, Revit, Civil3D, and/or RISA for preparing engineering plans.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills (oral and written) are required.
  • Willingness to travel for short-term assignments or construction oversight.
  • Experience with design in northern climates is preferred.
  • A valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • Weather: Primarily indoors in an environmentally controlled office setting.
  • Noise level: Standard office atmosphere.
  • Description of environment: Office building with a standard office environment.
  • Physical requirements: Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.
  • Travel: May involve travel to remote areas requiring alternative transportation methods (snow machines, boats, small airplanes, ATVs).
