Role Classification

This position is officially classified as “Reliability Technician I” under the collective bargaining agreement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan and schedule daily Maintenance Electronic Work Orders to meet plant objectives for timely repair, installation, and maintenance of plant equipment.
  • Conduct required Predictive Maintenance activities on a routine schedule to prevent unplanned breakdowns.
  • Observe the daily manufacturing process and communicate/implement improvements.
  • Follow Horizon guidelines for Good Manufacturing Practices.
  • Install, examine, inspect, maintain, and repair machinery, equipment, physical structures, PLC & PID controllers, and electrical systems.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical or electrical problems using PLC, ladder diagrams, schematics, PID, and/or CMMS.
  • Cycle equipment or systems to ensure safe and correct operation, improving efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Set up and safely operate machine tools (lathe, grinder, drill press, milling machine) to repair or fabricate parts.
  • Maintain maintenance areas in a clean and orderly fashion.
  • Operate a forklift and other heavy machinery when applicable.
  • Generate and close Preventive, Predictive, and Corrective work orders in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Adjust work orders based on priority and communicate changes to the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Assist in preparing the weekly maintenance work schedule.
  • Provide insight on the scope of corrective work orders and order necessary parts and materials.
  • Assist the Maintenance Supervisor and peers with task accomplishment.
  • Identify opportunities to schedule work during periods of downtime.
  • Participate in weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly Predictive Maintenance functions.
  • Prepare reports for the Maintenance Supervisor for compliance and budgetary requirements.
  • Assist with maintenance activities as needed.

Qualifications Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Electrical/Mechanical background necessary.
  • Apprenticeship program or technical background preferred.
  • Above-average computer skills including MS Word & MS Excel.
  • 3-5 years of experience with a computerized CMMS work order system preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in Preventative and Predictive Maintenance Procedures.
  • Ability to work with vendors to ensure price and availability for maintenance operations.
  • Proactively communicate with maintenance, operations, and Plant Management in a cooperative and respectful manner.
  • Support of Management Objectives and Policies.
  • Willing and available to work overtime if requested.
  • Ability to work willingly with co-workers and management to achieve department and company goals.
  • Support co-workers and management in carrying out daily maintenance responsibilities.

Job Specifications:

  • Multi-craft/multi-skilled with expertise in electrical, electrical controls, mechanical, pneumatics, hydraulics, and fabrication.
  • Working and practical knowledge of plant utility systems (boiler systems, compressed air, water filtration, wastewater treatment).
  • R134A Refrigeration systems is a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of minor estimating, scheduling, planning, and budgeting.
  • Working knowledge of PLCs, VFDs, Servos, and plant automation systems.
  • Working knowledge of National, State, Local building codes, OSHA, and standard industry safety rules/regulations.
  • Previous experience with industrial controls using Allen Bradley platforms, Motor Controls (Servo and VFD) is a plus.
  • Ability to work various shifts.

Language Skills:

  • Ability to read and interpret work orders, safety rules, mechanical and electrical drawings, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to fill out routine reports and correspondence, and speak effectively when conveying information.
  • Good oral/written communication skills and tact.

Computer Skills:

  • Working knowledge of computer system input, retrieval, and use, or the ability to learn.
  • Proficiency in Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Project.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to perform calculations involving whole numbers, fractions, decimals, ratios, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply basic concepts of algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions and deal with problems in standardized situations.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form.
  • Safety awareness and ability to identify and correct safety conditions.

Materials and Equipment Directly Used:

  • Shop tools and equipment (power hand tools, fabrication equipment).
  • Measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers).
  • Analytical instruments (multi-meters, oscilloscopes).
  • Powered Industrial Vehicles (forklifts, aerial lifts).
  • Office machinery (computers, printers, fax machines, copiers, telephones).

Physical Demands:

  • Occasionally required to sit, talk, and hear.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, use hands, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, taste, and smell.
  • Regularly lift/move up to 10-20 lbs, frequently lift/move up to 25-40 lbs, and occasionally lift/move up to 50 lbs.
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

  • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts.
  • Occasionally works in high, precarious places, in outdoor weather conditions, and exposed to wet/humid conditions, fumes/airborne particles, toxic/caustic chemicals, extreme cold/heat, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
  • Noise level is usually loud.
