About Engineering at LawnStarter

We have rebuilt our platform over the last two years, establishing a solid foundation. Our focus now is on expanding service verticals, dynamic pricing, and AI-powered features at scale, requiring a corresponding evolution in quality assurance. Our technology stack includes PHP (Laravel) and React/React Native, with Cypress as our primary test framework. We actively integrate Claude Code into our engineering workflow as a core tool.

The Role

As we scale into new service verticals and grow our engineering team, we are shifting from reactive to proactive quality assurance. This role is designed to own automation coverage, shape the bug process, and partner closely with Product, Design, and Data teams to prevent issues before they reach customers. You will report to the Engineering Manager and be embedded across the engineering organization, taking a hands-on and strategic approach to elevate the team's overall quality standard.

What makes this role different:

• Cross-functional influence: Work directly with engineers, PMs, Designers, and the Data team to identify risks early, deeply understand requirements, and propose improved solutions. You may be embedded in one or two delivery teams.
• Automation ownership: Lead the strategy for building and expanding our automated test coverage, not just executing predefined test cases.
• Process shaper: Identify gaps in our quality process and have the authority to implement solutions, not just flag issues.

What You’ll Own

• Automated test coverage: Design and grow our E2E and integration test suite using Cypress. Define the strategy, prioritize coverage gaps, and enhance quality across the platform.
• Bug process: Manage the full lifecycle from triage to production fix. Ensure timely resolution, keep stakeholders informed, and prevent issues from being overlooked.
• Cross-functional quality partnership: Collaborate with PMs, Designers, and the Data team to review requirements, surface risks early, and define clear acceptance criteria.
• Process improvement: Identify weaknesses in our software delivery process and propose actionable solutions.
• Exploratory testing: Test new features and existing flows across web and mobile devices to catch issues that automation might miss.

Problems to Solve

• Keeping automation coverage sharp: Evolve our E2E coverage strategies to keep pace with product growth, new service verticals, and explore innovative automation techniques.
• Leveraging AI and new tools: Explore and implement AI tools to enhance quality operations, increase output quality, reduce repetitive tasks, and discover coverage gaps.

• Automation coverage remains strong, with new features shipping with automated tests as a baseline.
• The bug process operates smoothly, with predictable triage-to-fix cycles and informed stakeholders.
• You develop deep business knowledge to anticipate edge cases proactively.
• At least one meaningful improvement to our quality delivery process is implemented and adopted.

Who You Are

• AI-native: Proficiently use AI tools (like Claude Code) for test code creation, maintenance, and extension as a standard practice. Comfortable with browser MCPs, agent workflows, and automation scripting.
• Automation-first: Your primary approach to problem-solving is through automation. You build test infrastructure designed for longevity.
• Customer-obsessed: You test with a user-centric perspective, ensuring flows meet real customer needs beyond basic specifications.
• Adaptable: Open to evolving tools, stacks, and processes, especially in the rapidly changing landscape of AI in software development.
• Collaborative and direct: Work effectively across teams, surface risks openly, provide clear feedback, and push back constructively when necessary.
• Technically solid: Comfortable reading and writing code, with a good understanding of front-end and back-end web services, SQL, and debugging across the stack.

Compensation & Benefits

• Base salary: $45,000 - $65,000
