About the Role

The Principal Modeler – Model Development position is within the Forecasting/Modeling and Surveys (FMS) team, a critical part of the Regional Planning Program. This multidisciplinary team uses data-driven planning to enhance the San Francisco Bay Area's trajectory, with a core deliverable being the periodic update of Plan Bay Area. The FMS team specializes in developing and applying economic, urban development, and travel models, emphasizing transparency through open-source tools and collaboration. This role will lead the development of travel modeling tools to assess the region's future and evaluate policies aimed at improving quality of life. You will manage a consulting team, contribute to hands-on development, and work on various modeling tools, including land use forecasting and population synthesis. This position also involves stakeholder engagement, technical mentorship, and representing MTC to diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the development and release of future versions of MTC’s modeling tools.
  • Implement and update features within modeling software.
  • Manage a consultant team for model development and network development tools, including reviewing deliverables, managing budgets, and negotiating contracts.
  • Conduct model calibration, validation, and documentation.
  • Present progress and features of model development to internal stakeholders and agency partners.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Deep understanding of activity-based travel modeling and network modeling.
  • Proficiency in Python for implementing modeling functionality, data collection, cleaning, coding, and analysis.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in a project and team environment.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Experience synthesizing technical information to support policy and planning decisions.
  • Data visualization skills.
  • Familiarity with the complexities of the San Francisco Bay Area's transportation system and land use/transportation dynamics.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with significant coursework in planning, civil engineering, environmental science, communications, business, or public administration, or a related field.
  • Seven (7) years of progressive professional experience in a field relevant to the assigned responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in transportation planning, city and regional planning, transportation engineering or modeling, financial management, economics, business, or public administration.
  • A Master's degree is desirable.
  • International degree holders must provide an academic equivalency evaluation.
