Study Management Associate (SMA) Regional Team Lead

About the Role

This position reports into the Clinical Study Leadership (CSL) SMAO Director and is a people leadership role responsible for the direct management of a cohesive regional team of 15-17 Study Management Associates (SMAs). You will be instrumental in positioning your direct reports for success to deliver best-in-class study execution, providing the necessary guidance and support for SMAs to master new skills, maximize operational efficiencies, and reach their full potential.

Responsibilities

  • Drive best-in-class study execution by creating a globally inclusive, innovative, empowering environment focused on skill enhancement, strategic thinking, and continuous learning.
  • Manage the performance of direct reports, including collecting stakeholder feedback, conducting performance discussions, setting measurable goals, and tracking progress.
  • Foster professional success and growth for SMAs through mentoring, individualized development plans, and providing stretch opportunities.
  • Ensure business continuity and support organizational deliverables through efficient, flexible, and strategic resource management, including demand forecasting, vacancy management, and individual development.
  • Guarantee adherence to corporate and divisional policies, procedures, and global regulations by promoting on-time training completion.
  • Contribute to the development of Quality Systems Documents (QSDs) and training curricula for the SMAO function.
  • Develop strong relationships with direct reports and cross-functional stakeholders to support aggressive execution strategies and drive results.
  • Enhance organizational efficiencies, process improvements, and best practices by contributing to SMAO/CSL/CDO workstreams and initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; a degree in a health care or scientific field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of clinical research experience, with at least 6 years in relevant study operations management and people management.
  • At least 3 years of direct people management experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to influence, communicate persuasively, align stakeholders, build trust, lead with respectful challenge, and form strong relationships in a cross-functional, global, remote/virtual team environment.
  • Proven success in coaching and mentoring, either directly or in a matrix environment.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to evaluate complex issues from multiple perspectives and drive informed decision-making.
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing needs, requirements, and situations while embodying AbbVie’s leadership attributes.
  • Experience in drug development/clinical operations, including advanced knowledge of ICH and GCP guidelines and operational understanding of the global regulatory environment.
  • Demonstrated success in study execution across global geographies and/or multiple therapeutic areas, and managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
