About the Role
The Data and Analytics team at Samsara is dedicated to enabling integrated data layers and providing the insights and tools for data-driven decision-making. We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer with a software engineering approach to data infrastructure. This role goes beyond pipeline building; it involves thinking in systems, creating extensible platforms, and pushing the boundaries of data engineering in an AI-first world. You will architect large-scale Spark workflows, design data platforms as products, and build next-generation intelligent tooling, including MCP servers and AI agents, to automate and accelerate data engineering processes. This is a remote position open to candidates residing in the US, excluding the San Francisco Bay Metro Area, NYC Metro Area, and Washington, D.C. Metro Area.

Key Responsibilities
Data Platform Engineering
- Develop and maintain end-to-end data pipelines and backend ingestion workflows.
- Contribute to building Samsara’s Data Platform for advanced automation and analytics.
- Work with diverse data sources (ERP, CRM, Product, Order Flow, Support tickets).
- Manage critical data pipelines to support growth initiatives and analytics.
- Facilitate data integration and transformation between applications.
- Develop and enhance data architecture, quality, monitoring, observability, and availability.
- Write SQL/Python transformations to create data products for Analytics, Marketing Operations, and Sales Operations.
Spark & Distributed Systems
- Design, build, and operate large-scale Spark and PySpark workflows for batch and streaming data processing.
- Optimize Spark job performance, including tuning partitioning, shuffle, caching, and resource allocation.
Platform & Systems Thinking
- Define and enforce data engineering standards, patterns, and best practices.
- Design systems for long-term maintainability with clear contracts, testable components, and thoughtful failure modes.
- Collaborate with platform and infrastructure teams to evolve the enterprise data ecosystem.
MCP Servers & AI Agents
- Build and maintain MCP servers for exposing data assets and workflows to AI models and internal tooling.
- Collaborate on integrating agentic workflows into the data engineering lifecycle.
- Evaluate and adopt emerging AI-native tooling for data engineering.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Champion and embed Samsara’s cultural principles.
- Mentor junior team members and provide technical guidance.
- Engage with cross-functional stakeholders to understand data needs and design solutions.
- Lead end-to-end projects.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Data Science, Information Technology, or equivalent.
- 8+ years of experience as a Software Engineer with a data focus or as a Data Engineer.
- 5+ years of experience building and maintaining large-scale, production-grade end-to-end data pipelines, including Data Modeling.
- 5+ years of hands-on Spark/PySpark experience in a production environment, including job optimization.
- Strong programming skills in Python and SQL.
- Cloud data warehouse/lakehouse experience (e.g., Snowflake, Google BigQuery, Databricks).
- Experience with ETL tools (e.g., Fivetran, DBT).
- API experience (Python-based API frameworks).
- RDBMS experience (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle).
- Cloud platform experience (AWS, Azure, GCP).
Ideal Candidate Also Has Experience In
- Designing and governing a centralized semantic layer for AI and analytics.
- Logging and monitoring tools (e.g., Splunk, DataDog, AWS CloudWatch).
- AWS Serverless technologies (API Gateway, Lambda, S3, SNS, SQS, SecretsManager).
Compensation
Annual Base Salary range: $118,107.50—$178,650 USD (dependent on city of residence, knowledge, skills, and experience).
This role is also eligible for an RSU grant.
