About the Role
As a Staff Engineer at idealo, you will shape the technical foundation behind identity management, subscriptions, messaging, and customer data. Your work will be instrumental in building a platform that supports personalized user experiences at scale, combining backend engineering, data engineering, and architectural leadership. You will influence data flow, service communication through event-driven architectures, and technical decisions supporting idealo's long-term CRM strategy. Collaborating with Software Engineers, Data Engineers, and Product Managers, you will define technical direction across multiple domains, working with Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, and AWS services (Redshift, Glue, S3) within a modern cloud-native architecture.
About Your New Role
- Define and evolve the technical architecture for CRM Tech, ensuring scalable, reliable, and maintainable systems that support idealo's long-term business goals.
- Stay hands-on by designing and developing cloud-native microservices, event-driven applications, and backend services with a strong focus on performance, security, and operational excellence.
- Shape the evolution of our data platform by improving data architecture, ETL processes, data warehousing, event flows, and integrations across multiple systems and domains.
- Lead technical initiatives within the team and across the wider product area, working closely with Product Managers and engineering teams to align technical solutions with business needs.
- Drive continuous improvements across software development, CI/CD pipelines, observability, monitoring, and engineering practices, while evaluating new technologies where they add measurable value.
- Mentor engineers through technical guidance, architecture discussions, and code reviews, fostering a collaborative engineering culture focused on sustainable technical excellence.
Skills & Requirements
- Extensive experience building cloud-native software systems on AWS and designing distributed, event-driven architectures using Java 17+, Spring Boot, Kafka, and modern backend technologies.
- Deep expertise in data architecture, data warehousing, ETL processes, and data integration, combined with hands-on experience working with technologies such as Redshift, Glue, S3, and MongoDB or other NoSQL databases.
- Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies including Docker and Kubernetes, and familiarity with serverless architectures, AWS Lambda, and modern CI/CD practices.
- Strong understanding of software quality, security, and reliability, including authentication, encryption, automated testing, and secure software development practices.
- Proven track record of leading complex technical initiatives, influencing architectural decisions, and aligning engineering work across teams without formal people management responsibility.
- Ownership mentality and the confidence to speak up, challenge ideas constructively, and be open to diverse perspectives.
