About Engineering at LawnStarter:
Our engineering team is restructured around initiative teams, each comprising a Product Engineer, PM, and Designer, supported by an Engineering Manager. Engineers lead AI agents to execute tasks, taking ownership of shipping work and achieving initiative metrics. We believe in the power of strong engineers leveraging AI to outship traditional team models.

The Role:
You will serve as the engineering anchor for an initiative team. You'll participate across the full lifecycle: problem shaping, technical approach, leading AI agents for code implementation, production shipping, and accountability for outcomes. Your focus is on achieving results, not just code volume. If an AI agent can safely ship code, your role is to ensure it's done correctly and drives the desired metric. You will write code directly when necessary for sensitive areas.

What Makes This Role Different:

• Lead AI Agents, Not Humans: Utilize tools like Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and our internal agent stack as your development team, owning their quality, safety, and velocity.
• Own Outcomes, Not Ticket Queues: Responsibility spans from problem-framing through production launch and metric review.
• Horizontal Partnership: Collaborate directly with PM and Design without traditional hierarchical approvals.
• Staff-Level Bar: Expected to operate at a lead level, making critical decisions independently.

What You'll Own:

• Technical Approach: Architecture, data model, integration, rollout, observability, and rollback strategies.
• Agent-Led Implementation Quality: Ensure AI-generated code is safe, correct, and production-ready through prompts, guardrails, evaluations, tests, and review loops.
• Cross-Functional Partnership: Daily collaboration with PM and Designer, weekly check-ins with EM.
• Initiative Outcome: Drive the specific metric the initiative is designed to move.
• High Shipping Bar: Maintain production correctness, security, performance, and user experience.

Problems to Solve:

• Achieving staff-level quality with AI agents.
• Making critical decisions independently in the absence of a tech lead.
• Focusing on shipping outcomes rather than just features.

What Success Looks Like (Year 1):

• Shipped 3–4 initiatives with at least two clearly moving their target metrics.
• Developed agent workflows adopted by other engineers.
• Reduced cycle time from problem-framing to production rollout.
• Zero customer- or pro-facing regressions from agent-authored code.
• Created reusable artifacts (runbooks, evals, workflows) that benefit other engineers.

This Role Is NOT:

• A traditional tech lead role with direct reports.
• A people management role (at this time).
• A platform-only or architecture-only position; it's product engineering focused.
• A role where AI handles all the work; judgment and accountability are key.
• A pure research role; focused on shipping to a live marketplace.

• AI Agents: Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, internal agent stack, MCP servers, evals tooling.
• Backend: PHP/Laravel.
• Frontend: TypeScript/React/React Native.
• Data: Redshift, dbt, Segment, Airflow.
• Infra: AWS, Datadog, Sentry, GitHub Actions.
• Documentation: Brain, Confluence, Jira.
