If you're a seasoned engineer eager to make a tangible impact on a rapidly growing marketplace and mentor others, this is your chance to shine.

About the Role

Join OfferUp's Business team, responsible for the platforms that power all business verticals, including Storefronts, Auto Dealers, Services, Rentals, and Jobs. These platforms are critical to the livelihood of their business customers and OfferUp's revenue. You'll operate the full stack, from high-RPS/TPS microservices to partner integrations, with a culture that emphasizes speed, instrumentation, and experimentation.

On this team, you own a feature from concept to fruition, including writing well-architected, tested code, rolling out features, analyzing metrics, and collaborating cross-functionally. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will be a hands-on builder and a technical leader, setting technical direction, shipping high-impact features with operational rigor, raising engineering quality standards, and unlocking new business surfaces.

What You'll Do

  • Define the multi-quarter technical roadmap for the Business team, aligning with company priorities.
  • Design and operate high-throughput microservices where reliability, latency, and observability are paramount.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement new features across all five business verticals.
  • Communicate complex technical designs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Partner with engineering teams across OfferUp to identify pain points, develop solutions, and evangelize best practices.
  • Drive experimentation strategy, design A/B tests, interpret results, and use data to inform decisions.
  • Make pragmatic decisions about refactoring, replacing, or maintaining existing systems, and communicate reasoning to the team.
  • Support, mentor, and foster the growth of other engineers on the team.
  • Partner deeply with Product, Design, and Business stakeholders to drive features and assess timelines.
  • Participate in a reasonable on-call rotation.
  • Maintain code quality across existing applications.
  • Create solutions and frameworks that enhance team efficiency and productivity.
  • Champion the adoption of AI tooling across the team, from coding assistants to agentic workflows for testing and code review, and help define best practices for scaling these tools.
  • Become a subject matter expert for the team's areas of ownership.

What You'll Bring

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Experience building and operating data-driven applications at scale.
  • Experience performing data analysis and translating results into business recommendations.
  • Hands-on experience using AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or similar) in a production engineering workflow, with a clear perspective on their benefits and limitations.
  • Experience using good judgment to balance engineering improvements with business needs.
  • Experience developing both short- and long-term technical vision for services or features.
  • Experience guiding and mentoring other engineers.
  • Strong Java skills (required) and fluency in at least one other modern language; deep understanding of OOP, microservices, and distributed-systems design.
  • Hands-on experience designing and building microservices and scalable distributed systems.
  • Strong knowledge of data structures and object-oriented design.
  • Hands-on experience with load balancing and handling large traffic volumes.
  • Experience with AWS or other cloud infrastructure.
  • A bias for shipping, learning from production, and iterating quickly.
  • BS or MS in Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience.

Helpful, But Not Required

  • Full-stack experience with React, TypeScript, and GraphQL.
  • Experience with payment integrations (Stripe or similar) and third-party platform integrations (Shopify, marketplaces).
