Staff AI Engineer - Notebooks

About the Role

We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer with extensive AI/ML expertise to join the Notebooks team. Datadog Notebooks offer a flexible environment for ad-hoc data analysis, collaborative investigations, and technical documentation, serving as an ideal interface for agents and humans. The Notebook team is actively developing AI-driven workflows for natural-language data analysis, assisted graph generation, automated investigations, and more. You will serve as a technical leader in this domain, focusing on building industry-leading AI-powered features. We seek a product-minded ML engineer with strong technical skills, excellent communication abilities, and a proven history of driving impactful initiatives from conception to completion.

What You’ll Do

• Spearhead AI initiatives within Notebooks, owning the design, development, and deployment of ML/AI-driven features.
• Shape the long-term technical direction and strategy for AI workflows within Notebooks and related products.
• Champion the end-to-end development cycle: from rapid prototyping and defining success metrics to running experiments, iterating, and achieving production scale and reliability.
• Drive product direction with a user-centric approach, ensuring the best end-user experience.
• Coordinate with other leaders and product teams interested in leveraging Notebooks for their AI-powered workflows.
• Develop robust agent systems, including tools, retrieval and planning strategies, guardrails, prompt management, fallbacks, and human-in-the-loop processes.
• Stay abreast of industry trends, guiding the adoption of new technologies and best practices.

Who You Are

• BS/MS/PhD in a scientific field or equivalent experience.
• 10+ years of relevant engineering experience, including experience as a technical lead.
• Proven track record of leading large-scale AI/ML initiatives in a product-driven environment.
• Significant experience in model deployment, development, training, fine-tuning, and evaluation.
• Passion for mentoring others and fostering a high-performing engineering culture.
• Enthusiasm for leveraging AI tools to enhance coding, problem-solving, and development processes.

Salary Range

$234,000 - $300,000 USD
