Engineering Manager, Platform Testing

Cedar is revolutionizing the patient financial experience in healthcare. We leverage data science, smart product design, and personalization to make healthcare more affordable and accessible. Our mission is to drive better outcomes for patients, providers, and insurance companies by transforming the often-frustrating healthcare billing process. Join us in building a future where healthcare is simpler and more transparent.

About the Role

We are seeking a forward-thinking Engineering Manager to lead Cedar’s Platform Testing team. This critical team is responsible for the systems, strategy, and developer experience that enable Cedar to ship high-quality software rapidly and with confidence. As our architecture evolves towards a service-oriented model and software development practices advance with technologies like LLMs, our testing strategy must adapt. You will lead this transformation, turning testing from a potential bottleneck into a powerful enabler of product stability and developer velocity.

This is a hands-on leadership position where you will manage and grow a talented team, collaborate deeply with engineers, and partner closely with stakeholders across Engineering, Product, Delivery, and Integrations. Your work will directly influence how Cedar builds and validates software at scale.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead Cedar’s Platform Testing team, defining strategy, driving execution, fostering talent development, and ensuring stakeholder alignment.
  • Develop and implement a testing platform roadmap that enhances developer velocity, improves product reliability, and boosts confidence in releases.
  • Collaborate with Staff Engineers and Architects to integrate testing strategies for our evolving service-oriented architecture, focusing on service-to-service validation, test environments, and product-aligned coverage.
  • Elevate the developer experience of testing by reducing feedback loops, streamlining test environments, and making failure analysis more efficient.
  • Own and optimize internal QA environment strategy to provide cost-effective, user-friendly environments for Delivery, Product, and Integrations partners.
  • Drive solutions for testing complex configurations, including model settings and entitlements.
  • Refine Cedar’s testing approach, balancing unit, integration, end-to-end, contract, and environment-based testing.
  • Champion testing best practices across engineering through documentation, training, and direct collaboration.
  • Partner with engineering leaders, architects, product teams, and internal customers to identify pain points and translate them into actionable platform investments.
  • Explore and implement LLM-powered workflows for code review, test generation, validation, and quality automation.
  • Manage and grow engineers on the team, providing coaching, performance management, and career development.
  • Cultivate a team culture of high ownership, technical excellence, pragmatic decision-making, and continuous improvement.

About You

  • Proven experience leading engineering teams focused on developer platforms, testing infrastructure, CI/CD, internal tools, or reliability.
  • A hands-on engineering manager adept at technical depth, understanding tradeoffs, and guiding teams toward practical solutions.
  • Strong perspectives on software quality, testing strategy, and validating complex systems at scale.
  • Skilled collaborator with platform engineering leadership and stakeholders, capable of understanding problems, defining priorities, and driving alignment.
  • Pragmatic and outcome-oriented, with a knack for knowing when to build, simplify, downscope, or deem a solution not worth the cost.
  • Enthusiastic about the future of LLM-driven software development and its impact on testing and validation.
  • Collaborative, curious, and respectful, prioritizing listening and understanding before driving change.
  • A proactive problem-solver who dives into details to diagnose issues and help teams achieve better technical outcomes.
  • A track record of identifying problems, proposing solutions, and driving significant improvements.
  • Enjoys teaching, coaching, and helping engineers adopt improved practices.

What We Look For

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, with substantial exposure to testing, developer experience, infrastructure, CI/CD, or platform engineering.
  • 2+ years of engineering management or technical leadership experience.
  • Experience building or operating systems supporting software delivery (e.g., CI pipelines, test infrastructure, release tooling, internal platforms).
  • Strong technical judgment with the ability to balance reliability, cost, developer experience, and delivery speed.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders and translating ambiguous needs into concrete plans.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of producing strategy documents, proposals, and clear technical guidance.
  • Experience developing engineers through coaching, feedback, delegation, and career development.
  • A bias for action and ownership in dynamic, evolving environments.

Bonus Points

  • Experience with service-oriented architecture, contract testing, integration testing, or distributed systems validation.
  • Experience with Python, Django, Go, Kotlin, or large monorepos.
  • Experience with GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or other CI/CD systems.
  • Experience with AWS, containers, Kubernetes, or cloud-based test environments.
  • Experience building internal platforms or self-service tooling for engineers.
  • Experience applying LLMs or AI-assisted workflows to software development, testing, review, or developer productivity.
  • Experience in healthcare, fintech, or other regulated domains.
  • Experience leading training programs or workshops.

What Success Looks Like

  • In the first year: Develop a clear Platform Testing roadmap and strategy, build strong stakeholder alignment, grow team talent, and fill key gaps.
  • In the first six months: Make significant progress on cost-effective QA environments, a testing strategy for model settings and entitlements, and a cohesive service-testing strategy.
  • Longer term: Cedar engineers ship faster with higher confidence, our validation scales with system complexity, and Platform Testing becomes a key enabler of Cedar’s reliability and competitive advantage.
