About the Clinical Coding Department

The Clinical Coding Department is integral to our healthcare system, responsible for accurately translating patient information into codes essential for billing, research, and planning. Our dedicated team works closely with clinicians and other professionals to ensure data accuracy, directly impacting the Trust's income recovery and service planning. The Role: NHS England Approved Clinical Coding Trainer

An exciting opportunity exists for an NHS England Approved Clinical Coding Trainer to join the Torbay and South Devon (TSD) Clinical Coding Team. You will be responsible for delivering a comprehensive training program for clinical coding trainees and apprentices, alongside supporting the ongoing development of our wider coding workforce. This role is key to promoting high-quality clinical coding across the Trust and enhancing colleagues' understanding of coding standards and processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, plan, and deliver training courses, workshops, and ad-hoc sessions for clinical coders and related staff.
  • Conduct inductions for new staff and act as a mentor for novice coders.
  • Advise the Coding Manager on ongoing training and development needs.
  • Assess learning needs and shape trainee pathways.
  • Implement and deliver regular training sessions for clinical coders.
  • Develop and update training materials, ensuring adherence to national coding standards.
  • Support the production of case study training content.
  • Provide coaching, conduct feedback sessions, and professionally resolve coding inaccuracies.
  • Serve as a point of contact for the Clinical Coding Department and contribute to policy and procedural development.

Requirements

  • Must be an NHS England Approved Clinical Coding Trainer.
  • Alternatively, applicants who have secured a place on the NHS England 2026/27 Clinical Coding Training Programme (CCTP) Assessment Day (26 June) will be considered.
  • Substantial NHS experience.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong leadership qualities.
