This is a rare opportunity to build a robust data warehouse and resilient pipelines from scratch with experienced entrepreneurs who have a proven track record of scaling businesses to significant exits. If you thrive on greenfield projects, enjoy shaping technology stacks, and aspire to leadership in a rapidly expanding, AI-first company, this role offers above-market compensation, meaningful equity, and the chance to lay the groundwork for data-driven success.

Data Engineer (Data Foundation)

The Opportunity

Skalar is transforming the often-painful processes of taxation, accounting, and payroll into a radically simple experience through the power of AI. We are building the backbone for businesses, allowing them to focus on growth. Data is the foundation upon which this transformation is built.

About Us

We are a team of seasoned entrepreneurs with a history of scaling businesses to millions of users, significant revenue, and successful 9-digit exits. Backed by leading venture investors, we are in a phase of rapid expansion.

The Role

As the first Data Engineer, you will be instrumental in building the data architecture behind Skalar. This is a greenfield opportunity where you'll have significant autonomy to architect and build our data warehouse and pipelines. Your work will enable future data analysts and scientists to excel.

Responsibilities

  • 0 → 1 and Beyond: Architect and build our greenfield data warehouse from scratch; take end-to-end ownership of data infrastructure.
  • Core Data Pipelines: Build resilient ETL/ELT pipelines to fetch, clean, and transform massive amounts of financial data from various third-party APIs and integrations.
  • Integrity & Security: Establish rigorous data governance, quality checks, and security protocols to ensure absolute data integrity for highly sensitive financial and employee information.
  • Leadership: Hire and mentor junior engineers (if interested) and gain leadership experience as the company grows.

Our Tech Stack (Greenfield)

  • We prioritize stable technology where it matters and innovate where it differentiates, especially in AI.
  • Our current product tech stack includes TypeScript, Next.js (React), and PostgreSQL. You will have full freedom to select the best tech stack for our data warehouse (e.g., Snowflake/BigQuery, dbt, Airflow/Dagster).
  • You will have a strong influence on technology, cloud, and architecture choices, particularly concerning data warehousing and orchestration.
  • A generous tooling budget is provided to ensure efficiency, with no legacy code or unnecessary complexity.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of data engineering experience, with a standout track record of scaling modern data infrastructure (such as BigQuery, Snowflake, Looker, and dbt).
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Expert-level SQL skills, strong programming skills in Python, and proven experience setting up modern cloud data warehouses and orchestration tools.
  • Deep experience dealing with complex third-party APIs, rate limits, and asynchronous data fetching.
  • Experience with agent frameworks (such as LangChain) and RAG pipelines, and you use AI for nearly all coding tasks.
  • Very good written and verbal communication skills in English (minimum C1); German is a plus.
  • A valid work permit to work in Germany.

Benefits

  • A unique opportunity to join and shape a company in its very early stages.
  • Rapid growth path within an expanding, AI-first organization.
  • An ideal environment to develop cutting-edge skills in the field of AI.
  • Above-market compensation and an equity package with significant potential for value appreciation.

Application Process

  1. Introductory call with a recruiter.
  2. Virtual or in-person meeting with a fellow engineer.
  3. Final interview with the founding team, including a live coding session (in-person, approximately 3 hours).
