✨ AI Insights & Summary

This remote Applied AI Engineer role at Dexter Health presents a fantastic opportunity to drive innovation in healthcare technology. You will be instrumental in developing and refining AI-powered features, directly impacting the efficiency of care teams and improving patient outcomes. The position emphasizes hands-on engineering, rapid iteration, and daily use of advanced AI development tools in a dynamic startup environment. If you are a proactive engineer with a passion for building impactful AI solutions and thrive on ownership and problem-solving, this role offers significant growth and influence.

About Dexter Health

Dexter Health is dedicated to building AI-powered software that significantly reduces the administrative workload for healthcare teams. Our mission is to enable caregivers to dedicate more time to their patients.

About the Role

We are looking for a highly capable and proactive Applied AI Engineer to join our team. Your primary focus will be on accelerating the development of new AI features and enhancing the quality, reliability, and speed of our existing AI workflows. This is a practical, hands-on engineering role, not a research or prompt-only position. You will be responsible for transforming ambiguous product concepts into fully functional, production-ready AI features. While the role centers on shipping AI product features, it also includes AI systems and infrastructure work as needed. You will collaborate closely with product and engineering, taking substantial ownership of your contributions. Success in this role requires comfort with rapid development cycles, making technical decisions under uncertainty, and daily utilization of AI development tools.

Responsibilities

As our Applied AI Engineer, you will:

  • Build new AI-powered product features from initial concept through to production.
  • Enhance existing AI workflows to improve quality, reliability, latency, and user value.
  • Design and implement LLM-based workflows, including structured outputs, validation logic, and fallback behaviors.
  • Develop evaluation frameworks, tests, and quality checks for AI-generated outputs.
  • Integrate AI capabilities into existing product and backend systems.
  • Work with both commercial and open-source LLMs, maintaining flexibility across providers.
  • Support self-hosted model workflows where they provide advantages in quality, speed, cost, or control.
  • Debug AI feature failures across inputs, outputs, data, backend logic, and user flows.
  • Utilize AI development tools as a core component of your daily workflow.
  • Ship features quickly while ensuring high production quality.

Requirements

We value speed, intelligence, ownership, and product impact over formal seniority. We seek individuals who operate with founder-like urgency, possess strong problem-solving skills, drive progress amidst ambiguity, and focus on outcomes.

Must-Haves:

  • Strong software engineering skills, especially in Python or a comparable backend language.
  • Experience building AI-powered product features or LLM-based workflows.
  • Proven ability to rapidly translate ambiguous product ideas into working software.
  • A strong understanding of how to design, test, validate, and improve AI outputs.
  • Experience integrating AI workflows into production systems.
  • Exceptional debugging instincts across application logic, data, model outputs, and user-facing behavior.
  • Experience with evaluation, testing, validation, or quality checks for AI-generated outputs.
  • Serious, daily experience using AI development tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Copilot, or similar.
  • High intelligence, fast learning speed, a bias for action, and an ownership mindset.
  • Comfort operating in ambiguous environments, making rapid decisions, and thriving in a high-trust startup culture.
  • Clear written and spoken English communication skills.

Nice-to-Haves:

  • Experience with frontend or full-stack product development.
  • Experience with self-hosted LLMs, model serving, inference optimization, or similar systems.
  • Experience with open-source LLMs and related deployment workflows.
  • Experience improving the latency, cost, quality, or reliability of AI systems.
  • Background in healthcare software, healthcare data, or regulated environments.
  • Experience with structured data extraction, documentation automation, voice workflows, or workflow automation.
  • German language skills.
  • Knowledge of nursing homes or elderly care workflows.

This role is probably not for you if:

  • You are primarily seeking an ML research role.
  • You are a prompt engineer without strong coding skills.
  • You need detailed specifications before making progress.
  • You prefer slow, highly structured corporate environments.
  • You are mainly looking for management, not hands-on building.
  • You want to use AI tools only occasionally instead of as part of your daily workflow.
  • You optimize for perfect process over fast, reliable execution.

Benefits

  • Remote work flexibility.
  • Fair compensation based on skills, experience, and location.
  • Opportunity to own important backend systems.
  • Work on software used in real healthcare workflows.
  • Experience a modern, AI-native development workflow.
  • Room for professional growth within the company.

Why Dexter Health?

Caregivers often spend excessive time on documentation, coordination, and administrative tasks. We develop technology to significantly reduce this burden. AI is fundamental to our product, but impactful AI features require more than just demonstrations. They necessitate strong engineering, rapid iteration, rigorous evaluation, production-level thinking, and deep ownership of user outcomes. If you are passionate about building AI product features that ship, improve real-world workflows, leverage AI tools daily, and take ownership within a fast-moving team, we encourage you to apply.
