What This Job Entails

The Field Technician II will provide essential support to all assigned locations, including data centers and Points of Presence (POPs), encompassing physical site services. This role involves coordinating with network teams and local vendors for installation, repair, and maintenance activities. A core requirement is deep knowledge and professional experience in deploying physical layer rack and stack configurations. This role requires travel.

  • Works on assignments that are moderately difficult, requiring judgment in resolving issues.
  • Requires some instruction on new assignments and infrequent checks on daily work.

Your Roles and Responsibilities

  • Maintain the highest quality standards in all assigned data center locations and remote points of presence (POP).
  • Participate in performing physical installation, repair, maintenance, and testing activities as directed, with meticulous attention to driving and maintaining the highest quality standards in the telecommunications industry.
  • Assist with performing card adds or replacements, software upgrades, and associated testing.
  • Recommend improvements to processes that may impact the quality of our network assets or improve overall efficiencies for any related process or system.
  • Provide site survey support for Outside Plant (OSP) and Inside Plant (ISP) projects, as well as large space & power and/or equipment deployments.
  • Perform site audits and reconcile data discrepancies in coordination with Network Surveillance and other groups as necessary.
  • Support the management of local construction vendors working on behalf of the company to ensure compliance with installation, repair, maintenance Method of Procedures (MOPs) and standards, as well as quality and cleanliness.
  • Meet/coordinate with Local Exchange Carriers (LECs) and other technicians to facilitate timely installation, repair, and maintenance activities as necessary.
  • Perform site surveys in support of network builds, augments, or decommissions.
  • Assist in coordinating site access, equipment staging, and other tasks.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Required Qualifications/Skills

  • Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school, and 2 to 5 years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to build productive internal and external working relationships.
  • Ability to exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
  • Knowledge of data center and POP infrastructure, including experience or deep understanding of OSP, ISP, interfacility cabling, fiber and copper distribution, AC/DC power systems, environmental controls, and relay rack/cabinet/cage construction.
  • Familiarity with installing and maintaining a wide variety of telecom/network equipment, including DWDMs, backbone and management routers, IP switches, and all optical and digital infrastructure.
  • Understanding of splicing, and how to maintain and operate within a manhole, vault, or handhole environment.
  • Knowledge of telecommunications testing equipment, from microscopes and source/power meters to OTDRs, and experience testing across all SONET and Ethernet bandwidths.
  • Knowledge of telecommunications testing standards and procedures, from length, wire-mapping, and bit error rate to power, delay, loss, reflectance, and dispersion.
  • Knowledge of state and local regulatory standards, procedures, and permitting requirements.
  • Ability to work effectively with LECs and other telecom service provider technicians, building landlords, electricians, construction operators, and non-technical end-users.
  • Ability to work independently, diagnose problems, and take appropriate action with minimal supervision.
  • Experience with spreadsheets, workflow and project management applications, and administrative software applications.
  • Understanding of how to use a Tier-1 ITSM platform.

Physical Demand & Work Environment

  • Ability to perform office-related tasks, which may include prolonged sitting or standing.
  • Ability to move from place to place within an office environment.
  • Ability to use a computer.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Some positions may require occasional repetitive motion or movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

Salary Range

$28.76 - $45.40 USD (Hourly). This range represents base pay only and does not include potential bonuses, benefits, or incentives. Placement within the range will depend on factors such as education, experience, and qualifications.
