Professional Structural Engineer - Facilities Engineering

About the Opportunity

TKDA, a multi-disciplined, employee-owned firm, is seeking a passionate Professional Structural Engineer to join our Facilities Engineering team. You will play a key role in designing and managing a variety of facilities and commercial/heavy industrial structures, collaborating with Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical engineering professionals. This is a chance to contribute to projects for industrial, government, education, and mining clients across Minnesota and the nation.

About the Role

In this impactful position, you will engage in the analysis and design of diverse structure types, with a focus on light to heavy industrial facilities. Beyond design, you will hone your project management, technical leadership, and client engagement skills by overseeing multi-disciplined projects from concept to construction administration. You will also have the rewarding opportunity to mentor junior engineers and contribute to business development efforts through client relationship building, proposal development, and presentations.

"Seller-Doer" Business Development

Embracing TKDA's "Seller-Doer" approach, you will partner with the Structural Group Manager, Market Managers, and VP of Facilities Engineering to track business opportunities. You will represent TKDA at project interviews and networking events, and assist in redefining department standards and identifying future service capabilities.

Hybrid Work Environment

This role features a hybrid work model: Tuesdays through Thursdays in the office, with Mondays and Fridays remote. Candidates outside the Duluth, MN area may be eligible for a modified schedule based on experience and business needs, requiring a minimum of one day per week in the office.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis.
  • Professional Structural Engineer license in the State of Minnesota.
  • Minimum of twelve (12) years of previous experience designing heavy industrial structures (e.g., manufacturing, mining).
  • Proficiency with RISA 3D or Ram Structural System, MathCAD, and MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Strong working knowledge of structural steel, cast-in-place concrete, and precast concrete design for new construction and expansion, renovation, conversion, and adaptation/reinforcement projects.
  • Previous experience conducting condition assessments of existing structures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for proposals, technical reports, team meetings, and client presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and develop less experienced structural engineering professionals.
  • Ability to travel up to 30% for team meetings, client consultations, and site inspections.

Advantageous Qualifications

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Previous business development experience, including proposal and fee estimate preparation, and capabilities presentations.
  • Previous experience or aspirations in managing multi-disciplined projects.

Compensation

$107,000 - $162,000 per year. The listed salary range reflects base pay for candidates with 12-30 years of related experience. Compensation is determined by technical skills, experience level, and qualifications. Candidates with more experience or different compensation expectations are encouraged to apply.
