The Opportunity

We are seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to join our Grafana Backend Services squad. This role is available for candidates located in the UK, Germany, Spain, Ireland, and Sweden. The Grafana Backend Services squad is dedicated to delivering a unified, end-to-end Grafana service for both On-Prem and Cloud customers. This encompasses ownership of the API codebase, operational management of its components, and the orchestration infrastructure required to scale Grafana for our Cloud product.

• Collaborate with your team to deliver new features and iterate based on results.
• Contribute to and review design documents for upcoming features.
• Embrace our open-source culture by contributing to projects beyond your immediate team's scope.
• Actively influence the product roadmap and your career objectives.
• Participate in on-call rotations and take ownership of the services you manage.
• Mentor and support other team members, engage in design discussions, and foster team collaboration.
• Regularly share ideas and knowledge across diverse technical perspectives.
• Work closely with other squads within the Grafana Division.
• Utilize modern AI coding assistants as part of your daily workflow, supported by a company-funded budget for rapid iteration.
• Engage in pragmatic AI-assisted development, including faster prototyping, test generation, refactoring, documentation, and incident follow-ups, always upholding strong code review and quality standards.
• Access frontier AI models such as GPT-Codex, Claude Opus 4.6, and Gemini 3 Pro.

What Makes You a Great Fit

• Solid backend development experience, preferably with Go.
• Good understanding of storage solutions, with an emphasis on relational databases like MySQL, SQLite, and Postgres.
• A deep care for developer and user experience, and the quality of the products you work on.
• Proven experience in delivering projects from requirement gathering and idea brainstorming to shipping a product to customers in a self-driven manner.
• Experience writing clean, robust, performant, and maintainable software.
• Experience mentoring junior engineers in a collaborative yet asynchronous environment.
• Enjoy tackling complex solutions; Grafana is a highly technical product relied upon by users who care deeply about their workflows.
• Ability to break down complex challenges into modular solutions, deliver MVPs, gather feedback, and iterate effectively.

Bonus Points For

• Experience with open-source software and/or commercial open-source companies.
• Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
• Experience with CI/CD, DevOps, or Developer Efficiency workstreams.
• Previous use of Grafana and Prometheus in operational roles.
• Familiarity with on-call duties and performing operations/SRE tasks.
• Exposure to microservices architecture and distributed systems, or a strong desire to learn.

Compensation & Rewards

• Sweden: Base compensation range of SEK 775,000 - SEK 969,000. Actual compensation will vary based on level, experience, and skillset.
