About the Role

You will be instrumental in developing and maintaining the Cloud Platform infrastructure for databases, serving as the bedrock for their development teams. This critical role ensures the availability, performance, and security of SumUp's databases through advanced automation and improved infrastructure code quality. You will champion the shift of database ownership "left" by implementing robust automation and deep-level guardrails, collaborating closely with Platform Infrastructure and Development teams to optimize costs, enhance self-service tooling, and actively participate in audits.
About the Team
The DBOps team, part of SumUp's Platform tribe, is responsible for the database infrastructure powering payment and financial products used by over 4 million businesses worldwide. The team is currently undergoing a significant transformation, migrating over 80 legacy databases to Aurora PostgreSQL, building comprehensive guardrails, and moving database ownership closer to development teams. This role is central to this initiative, demanding platform engineering discipline, an automation-first mindset, and deep database expertise.

- Collaborate with Platform and development teams to standardize database usage, reduce resource costs, and enable self-service tooling.
- Implement security guidelines and contribute to PCI and DORA audit requirements, embedding compliance into the infrastructure.
Who You'll Be Great For
- Deep hands-on knowledge of PostgreSQL, AWS services (RDS, EC2, S3, VPC, IAM), and infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform or CloudFormation).
- Experience with at least one programming language (Go, Python, or JavaScript preferred) applied to automating complex database operations.
- Proficiency in applying CI/CD principles to infrastructure workflows, with a solid understanding of containerization and Kubernetes.
- Comfort navigating both legacy and modern systems, managing competing priorities with a structured and analytical approach.
