Data Scientist, Community Data

About Atolls

Atolls is the world's largest community-driven shopping platform, active in over 20 markets. We empower millions to make smarter spending decisions across discovery, evaluation, and repurchase by connecting them with the right brands and retailers. Our global team of 1,000+ builds products used daily at a global scale, offering real ownership and visible impact.

About This Role

We are looking for a Data Scientist to join our Community Data Team. You will be part of a growing applied ML capability, working on real problems that directly impact how millions of users discover and interact with deals daily. You will build and iterate on models that go into production, covering areas like churn prediction and understanding deal resonance. With rich behavioral data, a strong domain, and a commitment to applied ML, you will also conduct complex statistical analyses and define key metrics to understand our users better.

Your role will be instrumental in leading our community intelligence and data integrity efforts, shaping the intelligence behind the digital destinations our users rely on. Your work will help us understand our community, build smarter products, and enable millions of consumers to make informed, fair, and rewarding choices.

Responsibilities

  • Data Science & Modeling: Build and iterate on ML models (Churn Prediction, Sentiment Analysis, Member Segmentation, etc.) using Python (Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn, XGBoost). Grow through collaboration and code reviews, with the goal of taking independent ownership of models.
  • Deep-Dive Community Analytics: Analyze complex member behaviors (retention cohorts, engagement velocity, viral loops) to uncover insights that drive community growth.
  • Problem Translation: Translate vague, real-world business questions (e.g., "what makes a deal good?") into measurable and actionable data science problems, engaging with domain experts.
  • High-Performance SQL: Master our ClickHouse environment, writing optimized queries that leverage columnar storage to process billions of rows of interaction data.

Your Profile

We seek individuals experienced in writing complex SQL, investigating web/app event data, and building predictive models in Python, who are dedicated to creating exceptional user experiences and driving innovation. We hire for aptitude and drive above depth of experience.

What we care about most:

  • Problem Translation: Ability to take vague concepts and define measurable metrics, collaborating with stakeholders.
  • Intellectual Honesty: Rigorous approach to verifying results and a commitment to accuracy.
  • Drive and Curiosity: Proactive engagement, experimentation, and a high personal standard for quality.

What you need to bring:

  • Solid Python skills and familiarity with core data science libraries (Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn).
  • Sound understanding of ML and statistics fundamentals (core models, train/validation/test splits, overfitting) to enable rapid learning.
  • Solid SQL skills, comfortable with CTEs, window functions, and efficient query writing.
  • At least one self-built, end-to-end project on a messy or open-ended problem where you defined "good" yourself.

Also valued:

  • Signals of applied curiosity (Kaggle, open-source contributions, personal projects/research in recommendation systems or LLMs).
  • Community Domain Knowledge: Experience analyzing developer communities, forums, or social platforms.

Our Benefits

  • A culture that values personal and professional development, with internal mobility opportunities.
  • A supportive and open-minded team embracing diverse perspectives and innovative ideas.
  • 32 days of paid vacation plus your birthday off.
  • Flexible hybrid working scheme.
  • Access to a learning budget and internal training.
  • Mental health coaching.
  • Regular global and local get-togethers.
  • Possibility of taking a sabbatical after three years.
  • A cloud-based company setup for flexibility and collaboration.
  • These are global benefits; additional local perks may apply.
