About

The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time position of Paralegal in the Voting Rights Project (VRP) of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY. This is a hybrid role requiring two days per week or eight days per month in the office. Established in 1965, the Voting Rights Project works to protect the gains in political participation for voters of color and has litigated hundreds of voting rights cases. Its mission is to build and defend an accessible, inclusive, and equitable democracy free from racial discrimination. The Project employs an integrated advocacy approach combining legislative advocacy, public education, and litigation, with active cases in over a dozen states.

Responsibilities

  • Provide paralegal support for a wide range of federal, state, and administrative litigation, including filing, reviewing, and organizing litigation documents such as briefs, motions, declarations, deposition summaries, discovery requests, and responses. This includes cite-checking, proofreading, and formatting such documents.
  • Handle general administrative duties for the Project, including processing invoices, tracking expenses and case costs, generating expense reports, and ordering supplies.
  • Handle travel arrangements.
  • Provide logistical administrative and document management support for hearings and trials.
  • Assist in case management, including maintenance of electronic files, physical files, court records, and litigation calendars; anticipate and identify potential litigation tasks and prepare accordingly.
  • Coordinate logistics for depositions, client meetings or phone calls, service of process, courtesy copy delivery, and other litigation support.
  • Work jointly with interns and communicate routine or procedural guidance on assigned projects.
  • Conduct internet and other factual research.
  • Handle special projects and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated interest in civil rights and civil liberties.
  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
  • At least one year of related paralegal or administrative experience is a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of the Bluebook citation style.
  • Strong computer skills with advanced knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Experience creating tables of contents, tables of authorities, mail merges, and creating/inserting macros.
  • Must take initiative, be highly organized and detail-oriented, and possess strong interpersonal and time management skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and see projects through to completion.
