Job Description
Turnitin is seeking a Director, Business Intelligence & Analytics (BIA) to report to the Vice President of Revenue Operations. This is a builder's role for a leader who thinks in systems, treats analytics as a product, and is excited about AI-augmented decision-making. You will establish the foundation for our analytics function: rigorous KPIs, unambiguous metric definitions, sound data models, and a single source of truth that leadership can rely on.
You will own the operational backbone of Revenue Operations analytics, gathering requirements, reconciling data, closing gaps, and transforming fuzzy questions into precise measures. You will lead the migration from a legacy Redshift/Alteryx/Tableau stack to a modern, code-driven ecosystem (Redshift, dbt, Dagster, Airbyte) with a version-controlled BI layer, treating analytics as a well-engineered software product.
This modernization will enable an AI-augmented function, where a strong operational core is amplified by emerging tooling. We believe analytics teams will increasingly work from an AI coding cockpit, leveraging agentic developer tools to build, review, and ship pipelines, models, and dashboards. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with agentic coding assistants for engineering work, prioritizing operational rigor.
As the subject matter expert, you will partner with field and operational teams, instituting leading practices that combine analytics-engineering discipline with self-service access. You will lead a team of Analysts, Data Engineers, and Data Quality Specialists. This is a player-coach role requiring both leadership and hands-on contribution, from data engineering to C-suite presentations.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Excellence & Metric Definition (The Foundation)
- Own and maintain a comprehensive, well-governed set of business KPIs and precise metric definitions (ARR, ACV, GRR, NRR, churn, bookings, pipeline, etc.).
- Define calculation logic clearly and consistently for metrics, addressing nuances like contraction, churn vs. downgrade, and ACV vs. TCV.
- Establish a "single version of the truth" by reconciling conflicting numbers and ensuring traceability to clean, documented sources.
- Gather requirements, identify and close data gaps, and translate business questions into durable measures.
- Design and document the analytics/data model for key personas (sellers, management, executives, operations).
- Audit data cleanliness, completeness, and reliability through automated testing.
- Partner with Business Planning & Operations to co-develop and improve reporting and analysis.
- Build automated, repeatable reporting solutions.
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and execute a BI strategy aligned with company objectives, focusing on operational rigor and scalability.
- Establish architecture, standards, and governance for trustworthy data.
- Shape the long-term vision and roadmap for the analytics function, including the transition to a modern, AI-augmented operating model.
- Provide thought leadership and drive innovation across the enterprise analytics portfolio.
Modern Data Platform & BI-as-Code (How We Deliver)
- Lead the migration to a modern ecosystem: dbt for transformation, Dagster for orchestration, Airbyte for ingestion, Redshift warehouse, and a code-first BI/semantic layer.
- Treat BI as a software product: version control in Git, with code review, testing, CI/CD, and documentation.
- Implement a code-driven semantic layer for reusable, testable metric assets.
- Drive data quality, governance, security, and access controls as code.
- Develop intuitive self-service dashboards.
AI & Agentic Analytics (The Amplifier)
- Champion the adoption of agentic coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Codex) for pipeline development, model building, and dashboarding.
- Build conversational analytics experiences for natural language data querying.
- Implement AI-generated narratives to explain dashboard and KPI performance.
- Pilot and operationalize AI agents that can take action on insights.
- Stay current with LLM and agent tooling advancements.
Collaboration and Communication
- Translate business needs into analytics initiatives, partnering with business users and Go-To-Market/Revenue Operations teams.
- Communicate effectively across technical and non-technical audiences and geographies.
- Present complex analyses and insights clearly to stakeholders.
Team Development
- Lead as a player-coach, setting direction, mentoring, and staying hands-on.
- Build, mentor, and manage a high-performing team of analysts, engineers, and BI developers.
- Upskill the team in analytics engineering practices and AI-assisted development.
- Foster a culture of innovation and data-driven decision-making.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years in BI, data analytics, analytics engineering, or related fields, with at least 5 years in leadership.
- 7+ years in business/revenue operations, analytics, consulting, or IT.
- Proven track record defining KPIs and establishing a trusted source of truth.
- Deep fluency in SaaS recurring-revenue metrics (ARR, ACV, GRR, NRR, churn, etc.) and their rigorous definition.
- Ability to source and integrate data from multiple systems and reconcile conflicting numbers.
- End-to-end experience in analytics solution development (requirements, design, development, testing, deployment).
- Strong SQL skills and working proficiency in Python for data work.
- Experience with BI/visualization tools (e.g., Tableau) and CRM data (e.g., Salesforce).
- Proven track record implementing self-service BI solutions.
- Experience analyzing complex data relationships and "what-if" scenarios.
- Hands-on experience with a modern, code-driven data stack (dbt, Dagster, Airbyte, Redshift).
- Comfort working in a version-controlled, code-first environment (Git/GitHub).
- Demonstrated, hands-on use of LLMs and agentic coding tools for engineering and analytics work.
Skills
- Systems thinker with strong analytical and business acumen.
- Self-starter with a track record of success on strategic and operational work.
- Ability to lead teams across functions and geographies.
- Player-coach with hands-on build and presentation skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and drive projects to completion.
- Sound business judgment and a bias for ownership.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Data Science, Computer Science, or related field. Master's degree or MBA preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting education and/or nonprofit institutions.
- Management or Financial Consulting background.
- Experience building conversational analytics, AI-generated narratives, or semantic/metrics layers.
- Experience deploying AI agents for pipeline building, analysis, or action.
- Familiarity with data quality and observability tooling, and governance-as-code.
