About the Role

Apex Clean Energy is accelerating the shift to clean energy and is seeking a mission-driven Senior Infrastructure & Platform Engineer to own and evolve our foundational enterprise platforms. This is a strategic role focused on building resilient, documented, and scalable infrastructure, including cloud infrastructure (primarily Azure), security tooling, network architecture, and operational technology integrations. You will be instrumental in ensuring our technology foundation supports critical business operations and future growth. This role reports to the ITS Director and collaborates with cross-functional teams and external partners, requiring leadership and technical expertise.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Platform Ownership: Own and continuously improve core enterprise infrastructure, with deep expertise in Azure environments (multiple subscriptions, resource groups, virtual networking, integrated platform services). Responsibilities span Microsoft Entra ID/Active Directory, Microsoft 365, and on-premises server/network environments.
  • Security Posture Improvement: Partner with ITS leadership and external security partners to enhance security, including identity hardening, network segmentation, and SIEM coverage/tuning.
  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Mature Apex's IaC practice using Terraform and Ansible, automating provisioning, enforcing configuration consistency, and reducing manual processes across cloud and hybrid environments.
  • Identity Governance: Design and implement identity governance controls, including privileged access management, conditional access policies, dynamic group logic, and user lifecycle automation.
  • Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA): Architect and support ZTNA solutions.
  • Operational Technology (OT) Support: Support OT connectivity and site infrastructure, ensuring appropriate segmentation and visibility between IT and field environments.
  • Documentation & Knowledge Management: Develop and maintain comprehensive infrastructure documentation, runbooks, architecture diagrams, and change records to build institutional knowledge.
  • Technical Leadership: Serve as a technical escalation point for ITS Operations Specialists, mentor junior team members, and elevate the team's technical baseline.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Communicate proactively with ITS leadership, stakeholders, and vendors, translating technical findings into business risk language.
  • Compliance: Contribute to ITS policy compliance by implementing technical controls aligned with standards and frameworks.
  • Risk Management: Identify and anticipate infrastructure risks, providing prioritized, actionable remediation recommendations.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field, or equivalent professional experience. Relevant certifications (e.g., Microsoft SC-100/AZ-305, CrowdStrike CCFA, CompTIA Security+) are a plus.
  • Experience: 7+ years of enterprise infrastructure or platform engineering experience, with at least 3 years in a senior or lead capacity. Prior experience leading infrastructure through cloud migration or major platform modernization is strongly preferred.
  • Technical Depth: Expert proficiency in Microsoft Entra ID, Active Directory, Azure, and Microsoft 365 administration. Hands-on experience with SIEM tools, ZTNA solutions, and network architecture (segmentation, VLANs, firewall policy). Familiarity with IT/OT convergence environments is a differentiator.
  • Security Mindset: Innate security focus in infrastructure design and implementation, understanding of defense-in-depth, and ability to map technical controls to business risk.
  • Project Management: Ability to manage multiple parallel technical workstreams, scope work, communicate progress, and deliver against commitments.
  • Communication: Strong written communication skills for technical briefings and summaries; effective engagement with non-technical stakeholders.
  • Collaboration & Influence: Ability to build trust across departments, work with managed service partners and consultants, and influence outcomes in a collaborative environment.
  • Character: Self-directed, intellectually curious, calm under pressure, takes ownership, and proactively identifies and solves problems.

Benefits & Growth

  • Mission-driven, energetic environment.
  • Respect for individuality and differences.
  • Collaborative and driven professional workforce.
  • Ongoing support, learning, and mentorship.
  • Training, strategies, and tools for personal and professional growth.
  • Team atmosphere focused on making an impact.
  • Opportunities to volunteer and give back.
  • Exceptional benefits: Medical and dental, 401(k) with corporate match.
  • Base and bonus commensurate with experience.
  • Responsible Paid Time Off plus standard company holidays.
  • Comprehensive high-deductible health plans, dental and vision insurance, short-term and long-term disability, group life insurance, flexible spending arrangements, company-paid parking and cell phone, fitness and wellness discounts.
