Senior Software Engineer, Backend Systems

Tines, a leader in intelligent workflow automation, is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our growing engineering team. You will play a pivotal role in scaling the throughput and performance of our backend job processing system and code execution engines. This is an opportunity to have an influential voice in shaping our technical direction, product, and culture, working within a supportive and collaborative engineering environment.

The Role

You will join the team primarily responsible for scaling the throughput and performance of the backend job processing system and code execution engines that power Tines’ intelligent workflows. As a small but growing software engineering organization, this role offers broad exposure across our product and stack.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical direction for some of Tines’ most critical systems.
  • Make impactful changes to our codebase, seeing them live in production rapidly.
  • Shape how jobs and code are executed at the core of our application.
  • Write and review high-quality, well-tested code to ensure product stability and maintainability.
  • Identify and implement improvements in our codebase and work processes.
  • Own the full lifecycle of the software you write, from development to production and beyond, incorporating customer feedback.
  • Mentor other engineers, providing support and guidance to foster their growth.

Projects You Might Work On

  • Build robust, high-availability systems for massive data throughput.
  • Improve action throughput to meet growing customer scale.
  • Create controls for job prioritization and configuration.
  • Develop features for code execution within our product.
  • Ensure fair and balanced job execution on multitenant stacks.
  • Contribute to our engineering blog by sharing insights.

Is This Role Right for You?

  • Experience: Typically 10+ years as a professional software engineer with a proven track record as a staff software engineer. Experience in areas such as Linux systems, container technologies, filesystems, low-level system primitives (Rust/Go), and strong debugging skills is highly valued.
  • Abilities Over Education: We value demonstrated skills and knowledge over formal education or specific past employers.
  • Broad Scope: While the focus is on backend systems, you'll work across the stack and be excited to contribute where needed, with team support. This offers significant learning opportunities.
  • Impact-Focused: We prioritize solving important problems that make a difference. We use common tools like Ruby, Rails, React, TypeScript, Rust, Go, Postgres, Redis, AWS CDK, and Docker.
  • Engineer Productivity: We invest heavily in developer experience, including build times and test reliability, and evaluate LLMs to enhance effectiveness.
  • Sustainable Work: We promote healthy work-life balance with reasonable hours, holidays, and realistic workloads to prevent burnout.
  • Visible Contributions: Your impact will be clear and recognized within our small, collaborative team.
  • Inclusive Culture: We foster a supportive environment where kindness, respect, and collaboration are paramount. We do not tolerate poor treatment of colleagues.
