Senior Software Engineer, Cash & Close and Shift Review (India)

Toast is experiencing rapid growth and is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Cash & Close and Shift Review team in India. This role will be instrumental in defining, designing, building, and maintaining software solutions that enhance developer effectiveness and provide a world-class experience for engineers across the business.

You will help build products that enable restaurants to reconcile sales, manage cash-handling workflows, review shift performance, and gain operational insights across Toast's ecosystem.

About this Role (Responsibilities)

• Collaborate with UX, PM, QA, and other engineers to build and enhance Android applications and supporting backend services.
• Ensure quality through automated testing, code reviews, and engineering best practices.
• Participate in the full software development lifecycle: design, prototyping, deployment, and maintenance.
• Ensure robustness, performance, and reliability of Android applications and backend systems.
• Contribute to API design and service integrations for Cash & Close and Shift Review workflows.
• Work closely with technical leads to deliver high-impact customer and business outcomes.
• Make sound technical decisions and recommendations supporting long-term product and platform goals.
• Stay attuned to customer needs through user interviews, research, and feedback sessions.
• Roll out features to customers, monitor production health, and measure success.
• Mentor and support other engineers through code reviews, design discussions, and knowledge sharing.

Do You Have the Right Ingredients? (Requirements)

• 6+ years of experience developing and maintaining Android applications.
• Highly proficient in native Android development using Kotlin.
• Experience designing, building, or integrating backend services and APIs.
• Strong understanding of software design, testing, and engineering best practices.
• Experience with distributed systems, microservices, or cloud-based architectures is a plus.
• Passionate about user satisfaction and product adoption.
• Excellent cross-team communication skills on technical topics.

Our Tech Stack

Toast's products utilize a diverse stack including guest and restaurant-facing Android tablets, backend services in Java, and web applications. Our backend services operate on a microservice architecture (Java 8, DropWizard) leveraging AWS services. We use sharded Postgres databases and Apache Spark for large-scale data workloads. Frontend development primarily uses React and ES6. The main Toast POS application is an Android application built with Java and Kotlin. RabbitMQ clusters and direct tablet-to-backend communication handle data transfer.
