PowerLines is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to modernizing the utility regulatory system to benefit American energy consumers, lower utility bills, and grow the economy. We focus on state public utilities commissions (PUCs) that significantly influence utility spending and the future of our energy system. About the Role

PowerLines is seeking a part-time Freelance Designer (Contract) to support our design and brand efforts. This role is remote, with a target of 20-30 hours per week for an initial 3-6 month contract. As an early-stage nonprofit, we are developing best practices for our communication systems and creative processes. Workload and hours may fluctuate based on organizational priorities, report launches, and events. Evening and weekend work may be required around critical deadlines.

The ideal candidate is a strong visual communicator experienced in both print and digital design, with excellent organizational and time management skills. You should be able to work flexibly amidst shifting priorities and deadlines. You will collaborate with our policy and communications teams to create compelling graphics and materials that advance PowerLines' mission and public engagement efforts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and produce a variety of materials, including:
  • Multi-page reports and publications
  • Event materials (flyers, handouts, banners)
  • Data visualizations (charts, infographics, diagrams)
  • Social media graphics
  • Web graphics
  • Templates (documents, PowerPoint presentations, social graphics)
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders to translate complex policy into clear and engaging materials.
  • Support and help refine the existing PowerLines brand identity.
  • Assist in establishing and improving internal design workflows and organizational best practices.
  • Manage multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining high quality and consistent communication.

Requirements:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design or a related field, plus at least 3 years of relevant professional experience. (5 years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree).
  • Strong portfolio showcasing expertise in print and digital design.
  • High proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Photoshop.
  • Experience designing long-form documents or publication layouts.
  • Experience creating data visualizations and complex graphics.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and project management skills.
  • Ability to adapt to evolving priorities and shifting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively with diverse teams.
  • Strong problem-solving and ideation skills.
  • Experience with video editing, web design, or working with nonprofit/policy-driven organizations is a bonus.
