Role Overview

Working on a major nuclear power plant project, you will be responsible for the planning, execution, and delivery of commissioning activities for mechanical systems supporting the fuel route and reactor operations. This role ensures systems are commissioned safely, compliantly, and according to project schedules and operational readiness objectives. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team, facilitating the transition of systems from construction through to handover to operations, upholding the highest standards of nuclear safety and quality.

Framework & Boundaries

This role evolves throughout the project lifecycle, blending technical expertise with project management skills. You will contribute to detailed planning and preparation, oversee factory and commissioning tests, analyze results, and justify readiness for commercial operation. Close collaboration with Responsible Designers and project partners is key to ensuring compliance with commissioning documents and safety justifications. Building strong relationships across engineering, construction, operations, quality, and project management teams is crucial for success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, review, and implement commissioning documentation (CTDs, CWIs, Test Procedures, Method Statements, Risk Assessments).
  • Execute commissioning activities for mechanical systems (fuel handling, mechanical handling, cooling, ventilation, process systems, plant equipment).
  • Coordinate and supervise technicians, contractors, and vendors during testing.
  • Ensure compliance with nuclear site licence conditions, regulatory requirements, commissioning processes, and safety standards.
  • Review construction completion records and verify system readiness.
  • Identify and manage commissioning defects and non-conformances.
  • Support system walkdowns, inspections, and turnover activities.
  • Participate in commissioning risk assessments and hazard identification.
  • Record, analyze, and report test results, ensuring accurate documentation.
  • Interface with multidisciplinary teams to resolve technical issues and maintain milestones.
  • Support integrated system testing and operational readiness.
  • Contribute to lessons learned and continuous improvement initiatives.

Key Accountabilities

  • Delivery of commissioning activities on schedule.
  • Adherence to nuclear safety culture and regulatory expectations.
  • Production of high-quality commissioning records.
  • Safe execution of testing activities.
  • Effective management of commissioning issues and technical risks.
  • Successful handover of systems to Operations.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Essential: Degree or HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Essential: Strong experience in commissioning, testing, operation, or maintenance of complex mechanical systems in highly regulated sectors (preferably nuclear or O&G).
  • Essential: Familiarity with UK nuclear regulatory requirements and ONR expectations.
  • Essential: Experience in FAT oversight, supplier engagement, and specialist testing.
  • Essential: Knowledge of mechanical plant, rotating equipment, piping systems, valves, and process equipment.
  • Essential: Experience producing and reviewing technical procedures and engineering documentation.
  • Essential: Strong understanding of safe systems of work and risk management processes.
  • Essential: Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Essential: Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical standards.
  • Desirable: Experience within the nuclear industry (new build or major infrastructure).
  • Desirable: Knowledge of EPR reactor systems and fuel route equipment.
  • Desirable: Experience with EPR (NNB) electrical system architecture.
  • Desirable: Chartered Engineer status or working towards it.
