✨ AI Insights & Summary

Join Butter, a dynamic early-stage startup founded by ex-Airbnb, Instagram, and Snap veterans, on a mission to redefine online friendships. This contract-to-hire Product Designer role offers a unique opportunity to shape a groundbreaking social product from its inception, working directly with founders and influencing foundational product decisions. If you possess exceptional design craft, a passion for consumer products, and thrive in ambiguous, high-ownership environments, this is your chance to make a significant impact and potentially transition into a full-time role with equity.

About Butter

Butter is building a new kind of social product focused on fostering deeper connections within smaller groups. Unlike broadcast-centric apps, Butter empowers friend groups to create and engage within custom mini-apps, ranging from games to utilities and unique shared experiences. Our vision is for Butter to become the primary digital space where friendships live and evolve.

We are a lean, fast-moving team of 6 former Airbnb employees with additional experience from Instagram and Snap, backed by top-tier investors.

About the Role

We are seeking a Product Designer with exceptional craft and strong product instincts for a remote or hybrid role in San Francisco. This is an initial contract position with a high likelihood of converting to full-time for the right candidate. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our product and design culture, making foundational decisions that define Butter's user experience.

This role demands a designer who thinks beyond UI and cares deeply about the entire product experience. You will collaborate directly with the founders, own projects from concept to execution, and tackle challenges across core product areas including group spaces, mini-apps, creation tools, onboarding, discovery, and our emerging AI systems.

As the product is still in its early stages, expect a high degree of ownership, ambiguity, and influence.

What You'll Do

  • Design end-to-end product experiences, from initial concept to shipped product.
  • Develop simple, elegant solutions for complex interaction problems.
  • Define interaction patterns, motion design, visual systems, and product quality standards.
  • Design and iterate on key user experiences such as group spaces, mini-apps, creation flows, and discovery features.
  • Collaborate closely with founders, engineering, and product teams to shape company strategy.
  • Engage directly with users to translate insights into product direction.
  • Elevate the overall quality and craft of the entire product.

Must-Haves

  • 3+ years of experience designing consumer products.
  • Demonstrated strength in visual design, interaction design, and product thinking.
  • A portfolio showcasing exceptional craft and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to simplify complex workflows into intuitive user experiences.
  • Strong aesthetic taste and a deep understanding of internet culture, communication, and modern social products.
  • Comfort navigating ambiguity and creating clarity.
  • Ability to execute rapidly without compromising quality.
  • Excellent communication and storytelling skills.
  • Enthusiasm for startup environments and founder-level ownership.
  • Availability to work during regular business hours, Monday through Friday.

Bonus Points

  • Experience at a consumer startup or working on 0-to-1 products.
  • Skills in motion design, advanced prototyping, or creative coding.
  • Experience designing social products, creator tools, gaming applications, or AI-powered experiences.
  • Located in San Francisco or open to hybrid work (remote considered for exceptional candidates).

What We're Offering

  • Competitive hourly compensation during the contract period.
  • Potential to transition to a full-time role with salary, equity, and comprehensive benefits.
  • Flexible schedule and remote work options.
  • A high-trust, high-ownership, high-standards environment within a small, impactful team.
  • The opportunity to be instrumental in defining a product from its earliest stages.

Equal Opportunity

We believe that a team with varied backgrounds, perspectives, and lived experiences is essential for creating a product that resonates universally. We welcome and celebrate candidates from all backgrounds and are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.
