✨ AI Insights & Summary
This Senior Cloud Engineer role at OfferUp presents a significant opportunity for a seasoned professional to deeply impact a leading local marketplace's technical foundation. You'll be instrumental in shaping robust, secure, and efficient cloud infrastructure across AWS and GCP, directly influencing the scalability and reliability of backend services. The position offers substantial ownership, the chance to work with emerging technologies like AI/ML developer tooling, and the satisfaction of acting as a force multiplier for the entire engineering organization.
About the Role
OfferUp is seeking a Senior Cloud Engineer to join its dynamic Cloud Engineering team. This critical team is responsible for ensuring the scalability, reliability, and security of all backend services, while also maintaining a smooth Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) for engineers across the company. As a senior member, you will take end-to-end ownership of significant components of the cloud platform, influencing standards, tooling, and foundational templates used by the wider engineering organization. This role balances hands-on technical expertise with mentoring and strategic technical direction for a large-scale mobile marketplace.
Why This Role is Exciting:
- Scale & Impact: Work on systems that directly influence user experience and support every technical team, operating across a multi-account AWS and GCP environment.
- Ownership: Take full responsibility for critical infrastructure and platform capabilities, making architectural decisions that impact reliability, security, and cost at scale.
- Force Multiplier: Develop templates, pipelines, and tooling that enhance the productivity and safety of all engineers at OfferUp.
- Emerging Technology: Contribute to bringing new capabilities, including AI/ML developer tooling and infrastructure, to the engineering team.
Responsibilities
In this role, you will design, build, and operate the cloud infrastructure, platform tooling, and CI/CD systems that underpin OfferUp’s core applications. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
- Building Cloud Infrastructure as Code: Design, implement, and maintain AWS and GCP infrastructure using Terraform, focusing on reliability, security, and cost optimization.
- Owning the Kubernetes & GitOps Platform: Manage and evolve EKS/GKE, including cluster upgrades, Envoy/Gloo networking, Helm, and ArgoCD delivery.
- Ensuring SDLC Speed and Safety: Develop CI/CD pipelines and developer workflows (GitHub Actions, monorepo tooling, JFrog Artifactory), and maintain backend “golden templates” and shared libraries.
- Leading Platform Migrations: Plan, execute, and de-risk migrations for observability, data stores, Kubernetes, and multi-account setups, including rollback strategies.
- Driving Operational Excellence & Security: Own observability in Datadog, manage on-call rotations, remediate CVEs, handle secrets and access controls (Cloudflare/ZTNA, Okta, SSO, Workload Identity Federation), and optimize cloud costs.
- Multiplying Team Capabilities: Enable AI/ML developer tooling (e.g., Amazon Bedrock, Claude, AI-assisted workflows), lead design and code reviews, set technical standards, mentor engineers, and collaborate with other teams.
Requirements
To thrive in this role, you should have:
- Experience & Education: 5–8 years in cloud engineering, infrastructure, platform, DevOps, or SRE roles. A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Cloud & Infrastructure as Code: Deep, hands-on experience with AWS (ideally GCP), including EKS/GKE, Lambda, networking, IAM, S3, Kinesis, OpenSearch, Route53, managed declaratively with Terraform at scale.
- Containers & Delivery: Solid experience with Kubernetes (EKS/GKE), Helm, GitOps (ArgoCD), and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions or similar) in a monorepo or multi-service environment.
- Observability & Operations: Proficiency with modern observability tooling (Datadog or similar) for metrics, logs, traces, and alerting; experience supporting production systems, on-call rotations, and debugging complex distributed systems.
- Coding: Proficiency in at least one of Java, TypeScript, Python, or Go for automation, tooling, and platform development; comfortable with scripting and SQL.
- Communication & Leadership: Ability to articulate technical concepts to diverse audiences, lead through influence, and mentor other engineers.
Helpful Experience (Not Required):
- Experience with edge and zero-trust networking (Cloudflare, Envoy/Gloo).
- Experience operating data and streaming infrastructure (Kinesis, Flink, Redis/Valkey, Confluent/Kafka).
- Experience enabling AI/ML infrastructure or developer tooling (Amazon Bedrock, SageMaker, or LLM-based developer workflows).
- Experience with security and compliance practices, change management, and incident management at scale.
- Experience with GCP Workload Identity Federation and cross-cloud (AWS↔GCP) integrations.
