About the Role
As a Datacenter-focused Infrastructure Engineer at Railway, you will drive our strategy for converting capital into operational compute. Your responsibilities will span the selection of datacenter facilities, transit providers, and hardware, as well as building and evolving the software tooling that provides leverage for our small team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Infrastructure Automation: Build automation for provisioning, configuration management, and orchestration.
- Hardware Procurement: Design and procure over $10 million in compute hardware per quarter.
- Supply Chain Management: Manage and orchestrate global supply chains and vendor relationships.
- Datacenter Design: Design rack layouts and floor maps for optimal efficiency.
- Monitoring & Alerting: Construct monitoring, alerts, and dashboards to enable proactive issue detection.
- Operational Processes: Develop operational processes for hardware repairs, upgrades, and installations.
- DCIM Ownership: Own and evolve our in-house Datacenter Infrastructure Management (DCIM) and provisioning system, Railyard.
- On-Call: Participate in on-call rotations (1-2 weeks per quarter).
- Communication: Utilize RFCs/Docs to break down and deliver large, complex tasks.
This is a high-impact role with significant agency, directly influencing company culture, trajectory, and outcomes.
About You
Experience & Skills:
- Strong Linux fundamentals, including networking, storage, performance tuning, and OS-level debugging.
- Prior experience with hardware deployments or working in operations-heavy environments.
- Proven ability to deliver projects from inception to scale (0 ā N), including managing technical debt.
- Demonstrated agency and urgency in previous roles (remote experience is a plus).
- Foresight to design for future scale (10x, 100x) while shipping for today.
- Confidence to make critical decisions and the grit to execute on the most important initiatives.
