About the Role
The Safety organization is pivotal to Reddit's growth, dedicated to protecting users from harmful content and behaviors. As a Staff Data Scientist on the Safety Insights team, you will partner closely with Safety Product, Engineering, and ML teams to define strategy, evolve safety metrics, and drive critical analytics. Your work will directly shape measurement strategies, quantify safety experiences, and evaluate intervention impacts, guiding Reddit's strategic direction in user safety.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the measurement strategy for user safety, defining metrics, frameworks, and dashboards to monitor safety experiences.
- Utilize data and science-backed methods to inform Safety product development and rigorously assess product launches, policy, and enforcement changes.
- Design and execute experiments and causal analyses to estimate the impact and ROI of safety initiatives for opportunity sizing and prioritization.
- Own the design, development, and maintenance of scalable models and prototypes using statistical, ML, or GenAI methodologies.
- Tactically support product development from problem framing and analysis through launch evaluation and monitoring.
- Stay current on ML, LLM, and related methods to improve abuse detection, risk identification, and enforcement workflows.
- Translate complex analyses into clear narratives and recommendations for stakeholders.
- Mentor and upskill junior Data Scientists and Analysts in technical approaches for abuse detection and mitigation.
Required Qualifications:
- Relevant experience in Data Science, Applied Science, or Economist roles, preferably in safety, enforcement engineering, or fraud.
- Ph.D. or M.S. degree in Statistics, Economics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related quantitative field. (M.S. requires 8+ years of industry experience; Ph.D. requires 4+ years of industry experience).
- Fluent in statistical analysis, programming languages (e.g., Python), and SQL.
- Comfortable in innovative, fast-paced environments with a bias toward action.
- Strong technical communication skills, able to discuss complex topics with both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to deconstruct ambiguously defined problems into scorable components addressable with data.

Pay Transparency: The base salary range for this position is $217,000 - $303,900 USD. This role may also be eligible for equity.
