✨ AI Insights & Summary

Join Railway, a rapidly scaling startup revolutionizing developer efficiency by building the operating system for modern development. This Community Engineer role offers a unique opportunity to shape and grow a vibrant developer community, driving engagement and content creation from the ground up. If you're passionate about empowering developers, fostering innovation, and thrive in a high-autonomy, globally distributed environment, this is your chance to make a significant impact and grow with a forward-thinking company.

Community Engineer

About the Role

At Railway, we're on a mission to make deploying logic incredibly simple for engineers, eliminating the need to think about servers. Our vision is to make developers orders of magnitude more efficient by becoming the definitive operating system for modern development. We achieve this by building powerful infrastructure automation tools designed to make individuals 100x more effective and enable the creation of 100x more impactful systems.

As a Community Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in nurturing our growing community. You'll be responsible for ensuring our forums on Discord, our Feedback Forum, and Twitter are not just places for developers to connect, but also serve as a flywheel for valuable content that helps others. You'll have the autonomy to define and build relationships with new and existing community members, fostering a supportive and engaging environment.

What You'll Do:

  • Develop programs to recognize and reward exemplary behavior within our community platforms (Discord, Feedback Forum, Twitter).
  • Deeply investigate the existing product to identify natural onboarding points for new users into the community.
  • Promote the Railway brand through exceptional community support, strategic content distribution, and engaging events.
  • Define requirements for tooling and automation to enhance your own role and streamline community operations.
  • Actively engage with and grow our nascent open-source community.

About You:

  • Possess a keen eye for insight, capable of implementing social media campaigns that align with marketing strategies and resonate with niche audiences.
  • Demonstrate a strong sense of empathy and ideally have experience working collaboratively across different functions.
  • Exhibit excellent direction and prioritization skills, particularly when navigating the ambiguities of an early-stage startup.
  • Show a sense of grit, with the ability to dive into problems, implement solutions, scale them, and iterate when necessary.
  • Possess strong communication skills to clearly articulate ideas, drive implementation, and foster understanding.

We celebrate diversity and welcome individuals from all backgrounds.

Things to Know:

Railway is a globally distributed startup where team dynamics differ from larger organizations. While we value work-life balance and don't expect constant online availability, diligence with boundaries is key due to overlapping time zones. We are a small, high-ownership team committed to exceptional work. Rapid scaling means we rely on leverage—systems over coordination, judgment over process. Expect ambiguity, a fast-moving environment, and the opportunity to own real outcomes, making and executing decisions.

Benefits and Perks:

Railway offers best-in-class benefits, including a great salary, comprehensive health benefits for dependents, strong equity grants, and an equipment stipend. Beyond compensation, we emphasize:

  • Autonomy: Minimal meetings, with focused sessions on Mondays and Fridays to review the Company Board, respecting your time.
  • Ownership: A culture of high ownership and autonomy, where you're empowered to make significant contributions and drive change.
  • Novel Problems/Solutions: As a well-funded startup, we tackle challenging problems with innovative solutions, abhorring "busywork" and seeking creative, high-leverage approaches.
  • Growth: We are invested in your growth, providing support whether your next steps are within Railway or beyond.

How We Hire:

Our hiring process is transparent and straightforward:

  1. Initial Talk: An open-ended conversation to understand who you are and your aspirations.
  2. Work on a Small Project: Asynchronously create a template on Railway, audit the surrounding ecosystem, and propose improvements. This project will be discussed in the interview.
  3. Review Solution with the Team: Discuss your project and problem-solving skills with team members.
  4. Meet the Team: Engage with four team members from diverse company sections to assess collaboration and communication.
  5. Chat with CEO: A 1:1 conversation with the founder.
  6. Offer Call: Finalizing details and extending an offer.

Remember, the interview is a two-way street. Ask us anything!
