Senior Solutions Engineer

About Railway

Railway is dedicated to making it extremely simple for engineers to deploy logic without the burden of server management. Our mission is to dramatically enhance developer efficiency by becoming the operating system for modern development. Through robust infrastructure automation tooling, we aim to make individuals 100x more effective and empower the creation of 100x more impactful systems. Building leverage is fundamental to our approach.

Over the past year, Railway has experienced significant growth in its paying developer base. To capitalize on this momentum, we are focused on cultivating stronger relationships with companies seeking guidance on adopting Railway for their specific use cases. As an early Solutions Engineer, you will utilize your technical background to collaborate with prospective customers, existing users, and our internal team, ensuring Railway effectively meets the demands of their production environments. You'll be a key advocate for new features designed for complex engineering teams, demonstrating Railway's value proposition. Working directly with our CEO and product team, you will build our early pipeline, develop insights, and share them with customers. We have ambitious business goals for this year and are eager to partner with the right individual to lead us toward achieving them.

About the Role

This role involves working closely with our developer pipeline, providing guided implementations for customers. While Railway prioritizes a demo-optional developer experience, we recognize the value of expert assistance for adoption. You will collaborate directly with the team and customers to:

  • Proactively engage with customers to guide their success with Railway and facilitate onboarding.
  • Leverage your engineering experience to advise customers on making optimal decisions.
  • Collaborate within the broader team to advocate for customer needs by internalizing and relaying feedback.
  • Develop Proof of Concepts (PoCs) and demos, integrating customer insights and requirements directly into the core product.
  • Help design and implement scalable processes for identifying high-quality prospects.
  • Partner with the CEO on significant deals, acting as a strong advocate for the customer.

The Solutions Engineer role is pivotal in establishing Railway's revenue streams. You will not only build processes for customer identification but also work directly with them to ensure Railway is an ideal fit. Furthermore, you will catalog and internalize customer feedback, collaborating with the product team to enhance Railway's capabilities for larger organizations. This position offers a direct impact on the company's future and significant opportunities for professional growth alongside us.

About You:

  • Highly empathetic to the challenges developers face, with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Possess an inquiring mind, adept at understanding customer applications and helping them overcome roadblocks in setting up Railway.
  • Experienced with various infrastructure products, including a solid understanding of major cloud provider portfolios. Experience with Terraform configurations and Kubernetes setups is a plus.
  • Skilled at compartmentalizing, deconstructing, and analyzing customer feedback to understand their goals and how we can best assist them.
  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic and sense of ownership, ideally with experience in fast-paced, venture-backed teams. Willingness to contribute through code (e.g., opening PRs) to ensure customer success.
  • A continuous learner, passionate about understanding new technologies and their impact on developers.

Things to Know:

Railway is a globally distributed startup with unique team dynamics. While we value work-life balance and flexibility across time zones, clear boundary management is essential. We are a small, high-ownership team focused on exceptional work. Rapid scaling necessitates a reliance on leverage—prioritizing systems over coordination and judgment over process. Expect ambiguity, a fast-moving environment, and the opportunity to own significant outcomes and make impactful decisions.

Benefits and Perks:

Railway offers best-in-class benefits, including a competitive salary, comprehensive health benefits for dependents, strong equity grants, and an equipment stipend. Beyond compensation, we value:

  • Autonomy: Minimal meetings, with focused sessions on Mondays and Fridays for company board reviews, respecting your time.
  • Ownership: A culture that encourages high ownership and autonomy, empowering you to drive change and achieve significant career milestones.
  • Novel Problems/Solutions: As a well-funded startup, we tackle interesting challenges with innovative solutions, avoiding "busywork" and seeking creative, high-leverage approaches.
  • Growth: We are committed to your development, supporting your career progression both within Railway and beyond.

How We Hire:

Our hiring process is transparent and straightforward:

  1. Initial Talk: An open-ended conversation to understand your background and career aspirations.
  2. Work on a Small Project: Asynchronously create a Railway project simulating a customer migrating from AWS, documenting your approach and migration strategy. This will be discussed during the interview.
  3. Review Solution with the Team: Discuss your project and problem-solving skills with team members.
  4. Meet the Team: Engage with four team members from diverse company sections to assess collaboration and communication.
