About the Role
The Design Consultant is responsible for developing detailed roofing and building envelope designs, scopes of work, specifications, and other essential project documents. This role is key in guiding clients through decisions regarding the repair, maintenance, restoration, or replacement of their roofing systems, transforming inspection findings into clear, practical recommendations and bid-ready documentation.
Key Outcomes
- Consistently complete assigned design deliverables by committed deadlines.
- Maintain a low design document revision rate (<5%) post-internal quality review.
- Prepare accurate cost estimates aligned with approved scopes and pricing assumptions.
- Manage assigned design projects, meeting deadlines and providing timely project updates.
- Achieve 100% completion of required project records and documentation within 5 business days of milestones.
- Demonstrate a positive attitude, collaborative spirit, and availability to ensure effective teamwork and client satisfaction.
Responsibilities
- Prepare roofing and building envelope design documents: scopes of work, technical specifications, bid packages, drawings, construction details, and supporting reports.
- Evaluate roof and building envelope conditions through inspections, assessments, surveys, and technical analysis.
- Develop repair, restoration, maintenance, and replacement solutions aligned with client objectives, budgets, and industry standards.
- Prepare project cost estimates for roofing and building envelope work.
- Manage multiple design assessments simultaneously, prioritizing workload and meeting deadlines.
- Coordinate with clients, contractors, architects, engineers, and internal teams to gather requirements and resolve design issues.
- Present design recommendations, project scope, and technical requirements during client and project meetings.
- Maintain accurate project records, schedules, design files, and documentation within company systems.
- Review design documents for accuracy, completeness, constructability, and compliance.
- Identify and communicate project risks, quality concerns, safety considerations, and technical issues.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in commercial roofing, roof design, building envelope, construction documentation, estimating, or specification writing.
- Strong working knowledge of commercial roofing systems, building envelope conditions, roof assessments, and repair/restoration/replacement options.
- Experience preparing scopes of work, technical specifications, bid documents, cost estimates, drawings, and reports.
- Proven ability to manage multiple active design requests, project deadlines, stakeholders, and documentation requirements concurrently.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, construction management, or a related field.
- Registered Roof Consultant (RRC), Registered Roof Observer (RRO), or related roofing/building envelope certification.
- Experience using design, specification, estimating, or documentation tools (e.g., SpecLink, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Revit, Procore).
- Experience supporting client-facing project delivery or multi-building portfolio projects.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- Work Environment: Mix of office, remote, client-site, and field environments. Regular site visits required, potentially involving exposure to varying weather conditions.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to sit for extended periods, stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb. May require accessing roofs via stairs, ladders, or hatches. Requires visual observation, computer use, and occasional lifting up to 30 pounds.
- Travel Requirements: Up to 25% travel to client sites, project locations, and meetings.
- Schedule Expectations: Standard business hours, with occasional extended hours as needed for project deadlines or client schedules.
Compensation
$95,000 - $120,000 a year
