⨠AI Insights & Summary
This remote AI Engineer role at Dexter Health offers a compelling opportunity to be at the forefront of AI innovation within the healthcare sector. You'll play a crucial hands-on role in transforming ambitious product ideas into production-ready AI features, directly contributing to the company's mission of reducing administrative burdens for caregivers. If you thrive in a fast-paced, high-trust startup environment and are eager to make a tangible impact using cutting-edge AI development tools daily, this position is an exceptional choice.
About Dexter Health
At Dexter Health, we build AI-powered software designed to alleviate the administrative workload in healthcare. Our core mission is to empower caregivers by freeing up their time to focus more on patient care.
About the Role
We are seeking a highly motivated and independent AI Engineer to accelerate the development of new AI features and enhance the performance of existing AI workflows. This is a practical, hands-on engineering position focused on building and shipping AI products, rather than pure research or prompt engineering. You will collaborate closely with product and engineering teams, taking significant ownership of your work. The role demands comfort with rapid iteration, making critical technical decisions in ambiguous situations, and daily utilization of AI development tools.
Responsibilities
As an AI Engineer, you will:
- Translate AI-powered product concepts into fully functional, production-ready features.
- Optimize current AI workflows for improved quality, reliability, latency, and overall user value.
- Design and implement LLM-based workflows, including structured outputs, validation logic, and fallback mechanisms.
- Develop robust evaluation frameworks, tests, and quality assurance processes for AI-generated outputs.
- Seamlessly integrate AI capabilities into existing product and backend systems.
- Work with both commercial and open-source Large Language Models (LLMs), maintaining flexibility across providers.
- Support and implement self-hosted model workflows when beneficial for quality, speed, cost, or control.
- Troubleshoot and resolve AI feature failures across all system components (inputs, outputs, data, backend logic, user flows).
- Leverage AI development tools as an integral part of your daily engineering practice.
- Prioritize rapid delivery while maintaining high production quality.
Requirements
We value speed, intelligence, ownership, and product impact over formal seniority. We seek individuals who exhibit founder-like urgency, possess strong problem-solving skills, drive progress amidst ambiguity, and focus on outcomes.
Must-Haves:
- Proficient software engineering skills, particularly in Python or a similar backend language.
- Demonstrated experience in building AI-powered product features or LLM-based workflows.
- Proven ability to rapidly transform ambiguous product ideas into working software.
- Solid understanding of designing, testing, validating, and refining AI outputs.
- Experience integrating AI workflows into production environments.
- Exceptional debugging skills across application logic, data, model outputs, and user-facing behaviors.
- Experience with evaluation, testing, validation, or quality checks for AI-generated outputs.
- Extensive, daily use of AI development tools (e.g., Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Copilot).
- High intelligence, rapid learning aptitude, a strong bias for action, and a profound sense of ownership.
- Comfort operating in ambiguous environments, making quick decisions, and thriving in a high-trust startup culture.
- Clear and effective written and spoken English communication skills.
Nice-to-Haves:
- Experience with frontend or full-stack product development.
- Familiarity with self-hosted LLMs, model serving, inference optimization, or related systems.
- Experience with open-source LLMs and their deployment workflows.
- Proven ability to enhance the latency, cost, quality, or reliability of AI systems.
- Background in healthcare software, healthcare data, or regulated environments.
- Experience with structured data extraction, documentation automation, voice workflows, or general workflow automation.
- Proficiency in the German language.
- Knowledge of nursing home or elderly care workflows.
This role is likely not a fit if:
- Your primary interest is in ML research.
- You are a prompt engineer without strong coding foundations.
- You require detailed specifications before starting work.
- You prefer slow-paced, highly structured corporate settings.
- You are primarily seeking management responsibilities rather than hands-on development.
- You intend to use AI tools only sporadically.
- Your focus is on perfecting processes over fast, reliable execution.
Benefits
- Remote work flexibility.
- Competitive compensation commensurate with skills, experience, and location.
- Opportunity to own critical backend systems.
- Work on impactful software used in real-world healthcare settings.
- Experience a modern, AI-native development workflow.
- Opportunities for professional growth within a developing company.
