Position Summary

The Experienced Homeowner Litigation and Appraisal Adjuster is a senior individual contributor role within Openly’s Property Claims organization. This position is responsible for managing complex homeowner property claims in litigation and appraisal from assignment through final resolution. It requires deep technical claims expertise, strong litigation acumen, and confidence in independently driving strategy on high-stakes files. The ideal candidate can write and critically review estimates, navigate coverage issues, manage defense counsel and appraisal panels, and deliver fair outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Litigation & Appraisal Management

  • Manage end-to-end handling of homeowner property claims in litigation and appraisal.
  • Drive litigation development and strategy in close partnership with defense counsel.
  • Manage the appraisal process from invocation through award.
  • Make confident, independent decisions and escalate appropriately when needed.

Claim Investigation & Coverage Analysis

  • Conduct thorough investigations, including policy review, coverage analysis, and damages evaluation.
  • Examine claims for subrogation opportunities and potential fraud.
  • Issue coverage position letters, reservations of rights, and other formal correspondence.

Estimating & File Documentation

  • Independently scope and write property damage estimates using Cotality.
  • Critically review estimates from external experts, identifying gaps and unsupported positions.
  • Maintain thorough file documentation, including coverage letters, estimates, and settlement documentation.
  • Adhere to reserving best practices and update reserves accurately.

Customer Service & Communication

  • Provide superior customer service to all parties involved.
  • Discuss and provide timely updates to insureds, claimants, agents, attorneys, and leadership.
  • Maintain proactive control of all files, anticipating next steps and driving claims forward.

Negotiation & Independent Decision-Making

  • Apply strong verbal negotiation skills to resolve complex claim situations fairly.
  • Negotiate settlements with insureds, claimants, public adjusters, attorneys, and vendors.

Vendor & Partner Collaboration

  • Manage and collaborate with vendor partners, including defense counsel, appraisers, and consultants.
  • Provide feedback on processes and performance with new litigation partners.
  • Partner with internal functions (SIU, Subrogation, Legal, Catastrophe) for aligned claim outcomes.
  • Support and mentor peers, sharing expertise on litigation strategy and appraisal handling.

Qualifications

Required

  • 5+ years of homeowner (HO) claims experience, with demonstrated experience handling litigation matters.
  • Proven ability to independently scope and write property estimates in Cotality.
  • Experience managing the appraisal process from invocation through award.
  • Strong verbal negotiation skills and experience collaborating with defense partners on litigation strategy.
  • Experience with formal claim handling correspondence (coverage position letters, reservation of rights).
  • Active adjuster license(s) or eligibility in required states; must maintain licensure.
  • Experience in a remote or hybrid claims environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft and Google productivity tools.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organization, time management, and multi-tasking abilities.
  • Tech-savvy with comfort using high-end adjusting technology tools.
  • Ability to work highly independently and manage a complex workload in a fast-paced environment.
  • Agile and change-ready mindset.

Preferred

  • Experience handling claims in Oklahoma and other West Coast states.
  • Auto Physical Damage (APD) experience.
  • Innovative mindset with a track record of contributing to process improvement.
  • Experience with MacBook and Google Suite products.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • CPCU, AIC, or other relevant professional designation.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Budgeted Salary Range: $70,000—$90,000 USD
  • Full Salary Range: $60,750—$112,250 USD
