Paralegal - Bronx Housing Court

Riverbay Corporation is seeking a dedicated and experienced Paralegal to manage and represent the company in Bronx Housing Court. This role is crucial for handling non-payment, HP, and holdover cases, ensuring compliance with housing laws, and supporting the legal department's operations.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research and represent Riverbay in Housing Court proceedings.
  • Assist Counsel with negotiating court stipulations and conferencing cases.
  • Recommend settlements and notify management of case dispositions.
  • Maintain an electronic log of all non-payment and holdover cases.
  • Arrange for court-ordered maintenance and prepare witnesses for trial.
  • Coordinate monthly meetings with the Finance Department and the Office of the General Counsel.
  • Undertake special projects to support Legal Department operations.
  • Provide confidential litigation and administrative support to attorneys and legal staff.
  • Act as a daily liaison with outside counsel, updating them on Landlord/Tenant court matters and forwarding requested information.
  • Obtain and review shareholder files, submit new holdover cases to outside counsel, and ensure predicate notices meet all deadlines.
  • Coordinate with various departments (Residential Sales, Cooperator Services, Finance) regarding case administration and apartment investigations.
  • Coordinate witness availability and arrival for hearings and trials.
  • Professionally interact with shareholders to address needs and concerns.
  • Process monthly retainer invoices and related bills.
  • Evaluate incoming correspondence and phone calls, prioritizing litigation documents like summonses, complaints, and Orders to Show Cause (OTSC).
  • Perform general administrative duties and assist the General Counsel with special projects and investigations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Experience and Minimum Requirements

  • Required: 5+ years of prior work experience as a paralegal in a New York law firm.
  • Required: Knowledge of the laws and practices of Bronx Housing Court concerning non-payment, HP, and holdover cases.
  • Required: Ability to professionally represent management in housing court and make quick decisions under pressure.
  • Knowledge of large housing company operations and ability to work with all employee levels.
  • Skill in maintaining litigation case files and legal documents.
  • A Bachelor's Degree is preferred.
  • A Paralegal certificate is preferred.
  • Prior work experience managing a large caseload.
  • Familiarity with affordable housing laws (e.g., PHFL, HUD, Section 8).
  • Working experience with legal, financial, and property management software.

Testing

  • Drug screening, as permitted by and consistent with applicable law.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to travel daily to Bronx Housing Court.
  • Ability to carry files and testify in court and at depositions.
  • Ability to appear at night Cooperator Appeals meetings.
  • This role involves regular walking or standing for extended periods, and may involve stooping or bending.
  • Handling and working with various materials and objects is part of the job.
