Sr. Director of Data & Integrations Engineering
Company: Cedar
Location: Remote (US)
Salary Range: $280,500 - $330,000
About Cedar
Cedar is revolutionizing the healthcare system by making healthcare more affordable and accessible through data science, smart product design, and personalization. We aim to transform the patient financial experience, moving beyond a "one-size-fits-all" approach to one that mirrors consumer best practices.
The Role
Cedar is at a critical growth phase, building a new enterprise data foundation to power AI-driven products and client analytics, while expanding its integration footprint. As the Sr. Director of Data & Integrations Engineering, you will report directly to the CTO and lead an organization of approximately 35 engineers across Data Engineering, Integration Engineering, and Integration Support Engineering. This role is about making the entire machine run effectively: delivering consistently, developing people, reducing organizational friction, and ensuring operational quality.
This role comes with inherent challenges at the intersection of client delivery, platform evolution, and operational reliability. You will be instrumental in establishing processes, relationships, and stakeholder alignment to bring more predictability to a dynamic environment. You see ambiguity not as a deterrent, but as an opportunity to build and improve.
Who You’ll Lead
- Integration Engineering: Accountable for bi-directional data integrations between Cedar and healthcare provider EHR systems (Epic, Cerner, Athena, etc.), delivering new implementations, enhancing live integrations, and building scalable integration frameworks.
- Integration Support Engineering: The integration reliability team, responsible for on-call response, incident management, root cause analysis, and evolving towards a proactive, systems-thinking discipline.
- Data Engineering: Builds and evolves Cedar’s enterprise data platform, including ELT/ETL pipelines, data governance, Medallion architecture, and real-time data foundations for AI-driven products. This team is mid-transformation, migrating to a modern stack.
What You’ll Own
- Delivery Predictability: Establish and maintain processes, rituals, and accountability structures for consistent, high-quality delivery across platform work, client implementations, and production operations.
- People and Manager Development: Grow and develop engineering managers and their teams, fostering high performance, engagement, and a healthy culture.
- Operational Excellence: Own the reliability and SLA performance of integration systems, reducing MTTI/MTTR and driving a culture of operational quality.
- Data Platform Evolution: Partner with the Principal Data Architect to manage the data platform transition, ensuring trusted and accessible data for downstream consumers.
- Integration Scalability: Reduce onboarding time and cost for new clients and products by advancing integration frameworks and patterns.
- Organizational Clarity and Thrash Reduction: Build structures (intake, prioritization, escalation) to protect teams from ad-hoc demands and shifting priorities, enabling teams to operate with discipline.
- Cross-Functional Partnership: Build strong relationships with Product, Data Science, Commercial, and Delivery Engineering, representing capacity and priorities clearly and negotiating trade-offs constructively.
What You Bring
- 12+ years in software engineering or technical implementation, with significant experience in data-intensive, integration-heavy, or platform domains.
- 8+ years in engineering leadership, including 4+ years managing managers, ideally overseeing an organization of 30+ engineers.
- Solid technical grounding in integration systems and data, enabling credible engagement on architecture, risk, and build-vs-buy decisions.
- High tolerance for ambiguity, with a demonstrated talent for reducing it. Proven ability to create structure from chaos and thrive in fast-paced, evolving environments.
- Strong operational instincts, with experience owning SLAs, on-call programs, and incident management.
- Effective cross-functional stakeholder management, including executive presence, with the ability to translate between engineering and business priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Healthcare domain experience, particularly in revenue cycle management, EHR data models, or healthcare interoperability (HL7/FHIR).
- AI-forward mindset, with experience leveraging agentic developer tooling and AI-native workflows.
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary/Hourly Rate Range: $280,500 - $330,000 (subject to location, experience, and education)
