About the Role

Lumin Digital, a digital banking platform for credit unions and community banks, is seeking a VP of Artificial Intelligence & Data Engineering. This pivotal role will lead the development and execution of Lumin's AI roadmap, encompassing Generative AI, agentic AI, and machine learning, alongside the data capabilities that underpin these technologies. You will build and mentor a high-performing team, define the technical vision for cutting-edge AI capabilities, and partner closely with product and engineering leadership to bring transformative, AI-driven solutions to market.

The VP of AI & Data Engineering reports directly to the Chief Product & Technology Officer.

Responsibilities

Team Leadership

  • Hire, lead, and mentor a team of software engineers, data scientists, and ML engineers to build industry-leading AI capabilities.
  • Define talent needs and create development pathways for the AI and data engineering function.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, rigor, and continuous learning in the AI landscape.
  • Communicate technical direction, team progress, and delivery details to leadership and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with other development leaders to champion AI adoption across product areas.

AI Strategy & Innovation

  • Define and own the technical strategy for Lumin’s AI roadmap (Generative AI, agentic AI, ML), aligning with business objectives.
  • Evaluate, adopt, and integrate the latest AI advancements to drive product differentiation.
  • Lead the design and implementation of scalable AI capabilities, including LLM integration, agentic workflows, model development, and deployment pipelines.
  • Continuously assess the AI landscape for emerging tools and platforms.

Data Engineering & Foundations

  • Architect and oversee the build-out of robust, scalable data pipelines to support AI workloads.
  • Partner with SRE, Security, and Compliance teams to ensure data pipelines are performant, reliable, and compliant.
  • Define and enforce data quality, governance, and observability standards.
  • Drive adoption of best practices for data modeling, storage, and retrieval, including vector databases and RAG architectures.

Cross-Functional Partnership

  • Partner with Product leadership to identify AI opportunities for breakthrough product capabilities.
  • Collaborate with engineering leaders to share AI tooling and best practices.
  • Engage with clients and industry peers to inform AI strategy.
  • Translate complex AI and data concepts for executive, product, and business audiences.

Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, or related field. MS or PhD preferred.

Experience

  • 10+ years in software engineering, data engineering, or machine learning, with at least 3 years in senior leadership overseeing AI or data teams.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience building and deploying production AI systems, ideally Generative AI and agentic AI applications, in B2B SaaS cloud environments.
  • Deep expertise in ML frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn), LLM orchestration tools (e.g., LangChain, LlamaIndex), and data engineering platforms.
  • Proven track record of building and growing high-performing, multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Experience in fast-paced startup or scale-up environments requiring hands-on technical contribution.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Strong understanding of AI and data best practices (model monitoring, versioning, RAG, agentic deployment).
  • Experience in highly regulated industries (e.g., financial services) with knowledge of data privacy, compliance, and security.
  • Data-driven decision-making ability.
  • Outstanding communication, presentation, and writing skills.
  • Experience collaborating with product, SRE, and security teams in an agile environment.

Compensation

  • Annual Salary: $300,000 - $320,000 USD
