About the Role:
Horace Mann is seeking a knowledgeable Compliance Specialist to support Enterprise Compliance & Ethics efforts across Property & Casualty (P&C), Life & Retirement (L&R), and Individual Supplemental & Group products. You will help ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, support business initiatives, and mitigate compliance risks. This role requires an analytical, collaborative individual passionate about maintaining high ethical and regulatory standards while supporting business growth.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and mature Enterprise Compliance Policies and Programs (Fraud, Privacy, Information Retention, OFAC, AML).
  • Support governance of compliance programs through policy oversight, risk assessments, regulatory change management, monitoring, and reporting.
  • Collaborate with legal, compliance leaders, and stakeholders to track and communicate new or changing regulations.
  • Assist with information requests from regulatory agencies.
  • Investigate compliance concerns and policy violations, recommending corrective actions.
  • Track and facilitate remediation of identified compliance issues.
  • Coordinate incident response, business continuity planning, and crisis management.
  • Facilitate discussions to identify efficiencies and improvements in compliance processes.
  • Prepare compliance reports, metrics, dashboards, and presentations for leadership.
  • Coordinate the development and review of compliance training courses.
  • Reconcile processes/workflows for Enterprise Compliance & Ethics matters.
  • Prepare materials and participate in Enterprise Compliance Risk & Ethics committee meetings.
  • Participate in special projects involving regulatory compliance, ethics, governance, and risk management.
  • Conduct quality control assessments to ensure compliance with regulatory and internal standards.
  • Review standard operating procedures (SOPs) for alignment with compliance goals.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or advanced) in Business, Risk Management, Legal Studies, or related field preferred.
  • 3-5+ years of professional experience in compliance, risk management, legal, regulatory affairs, or audit within the insurance or financial services industry.
  • Strong understanding of insurance regulations, compliance principles, corporate governance, and operational risk management.
  • Preferred Advanced Knowledge: FCRA, OFAC, SOX, CCPA, SEC, FINRA, Patriot Act, AML, IRS, HIPAA.
  • Preferred Certifications: CCEP, CIPP, CAMS, FLMI, CPCU, CLU, or similar.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong project management, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively and explain complex regulatory topics clearly.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and sound judgment.

Additional Information:

  • Work Arrangement: Hybrid role.
  • Travel: Periodic travel may be required to Springfield, IL.
  • Hours: Occasional work during irregular hours may be necessary.
  • Confidentiality: Must comply with company policies regarding confidentiality.

Pay Range:

  • $66,500.00 - $92,000.00 annually.
  • Salary is commensurate with experience, location, etc.
