Senior Python & SAS Developer (Data Modernization - Census Contract)

About the Role

LightFront is seeking a Senior Python & SAS Developer to support a critical, long-term Census contract focused on data modernization. This role involves translating legacy federal statistical and survey processing workflows into scalable Python-based solutions using tools like pandas and PySpark. You will analyze existing systems, optimize backend data processing and database logic, and develop ETL and batch workflows within cloud-based architectures. This is a backend/data modernization role requiring careful translation of complex, established logic into maintainable Python solutions without disrupting current operations.

Contract Details

• Initially hired as a 1099 contractor with potential for full-time conversion in the new fiscal year.
• Remote work is available after initial onboarding.
• Onboarding Requirement: Must report to the Census office in Maryland for equipment retrieval and PIV-related onboarding. Reimbursable travel will be coordinated for non-local candidates.

Clearance & Eligibility

• Citizenship: U.S. Citizens only (due to federal contract requirements).
• Clearance: Must be able to obtain a Public Trust clearance (process typically takes 6–8 weeks).
• Candidates must be comfortable with the clearance process and timeline.

Responsibilities

• Analyze legacy federal statistical and survey processing workflows.
• Translate existing logic into scalable Python-based solutions.
• Optimize backend data processing, database logic, ETL, and batch workflows.
• Develop solutions utilizing modern data architecture patterns and cloud-based processing.
• Ensure seamless integration and minimal disruption to current operations.

Requirements

• Experience: Minimum 4 years of experience in data processing, backend systems, or similar technical environments.
• Python: Strong Python background, with experience using pandas, PySpark, or similar libraries for data processing.
• Legacy Systems: Experience working with and understanding complex, established workflows and translating existing business or data logic.
• Databases: Minimum 4 years of database experience, including writing, refactoring, or optimizing stored procedures, backend logic, and complex SQL.
• Database Environments: Experience with PostgreSQL, PL/pgSQL, Oracle PL/SQL, or similar.
• Data Pipelines: Experience with data pipelines, batch processing, ETL workflows, job orchestration, troubleshooting, and performance tuning.
• Cloud: AWS experience, ideally with services like Lambda, SQS, SNS, IAM.
• Operating Systems: Linux experience required for development and processing environments.

Helpful Experience (Not Required)

• Serverless architecture.

• Hands-on Base SAS production workflows.
