The Digital Strategies and Systems (DSS) division comprises Mason Publishing Group, Digital Technologies and Services (DTS), and Data and Digital Scholarship Services. DTS specifically manages the library's IT infrastructure, web presence, systems like Alma and Primo, user support, and digital data management to ensure seamless access to resources and a superior user experience.
About the Position:
The Director, Digital Technologies and Services (DTS) will lead the management of the Library Services Platform (Alma/Primo), IT infrastructure, online application development, web services, desktop support, and special technology projects. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Digital Strategies and Systems, this role involves leading library faculty and staff, collaborating with stakeholders to understand user needs and technology solutions, and participating in committees and workgroups to advance library goals.
Responsibilities:
Technology Infrastructure Management and Strategy:
- Direct the libraries’ primary services delivery platform (Alma) and public-facing discovery system (Primo).
- Manage authenticated access, IT infrastructure (servers), online application development, web services (library website), and desktop support.
- Lead the design, planning, development, management, and enhancement of the libraries’ electronic resources and web presence.
- Collaborate and coordinate with library departments on all IT needs.
Technology Services Change Management:
- Evaluate emergent best practices and technologies to improve IT operations and library system management.
- Strategically reskill and direct DTS staff to meet evolving needs.
Supervision:
- Set clear performance goals aligned with the libraries’ mission and strategic plan.
- Effectively communicate expectations, organize workflows, and ensure clarity of roles.
- Drive employee engagement and development through performance monitoring, feedback, coaching, and fostering a collaborative environment.
- Uphold university policies, legal standards, and ethical practices, addressing performance issues as needed.
Emergency Preparedness and Digital Preservation:
- Develop and maintain strategies for data loss prevention, mitigation, and recovery.
- Conduct IT risk assessments and implement systems like backups and remote storage.
- Create and maintain documentation for operational continuity.
- Research best practices for IT infrastructure to support digital preservation.
Service and Scholarship:
- Engage in university and professional service, research, and creative work as outlined by university guidelines.
Required Qualifications:
- ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, or equivalent.
- Significant experience leading digital technology initiatives and staying current with evolving information technologies.
- Considerable experience with Library Services Platform technology.
- Considerable technology project management experience (planning, execution, delivery).
- Experience supervising staff and/or teams.
- Knowledge of current and emerging information technologies for library environments.
- Knowledge of computer hardware, software, networks, and related technologies.
- Skill in analyzing software packages and hardware configurations.
- Strong communication skills for conveying complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
- Skill in effective delegation, setting expectations, and providing supervision.
- Ability to build relationships and foster collaboration across diverse teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Considerable experience with the Alma/Primo library management system.
- Experience managing system migrations to the cloud.
- Ability to lead organizational change in response to evolving technologies.
- Web and digital development knowledge and skills.
