The Fellowship Program

The Business Insider Fellowship Program provides a six-month immersive experience for early-career journalists. You'll learn from experienced professionals, become an expert in digital storytelling, and produce real work distributed to millions. This paid, typically hybrid role (with potential for remote consideration for exceptional candidates) prepares you for the next phase of your journalism career.

The Role & Team

As a Weekend Reporting Fellow, you will write news stories focusing on the impact of technology, corporations, and the economy on workers and the average person. This includes topics like AI's effect on the workforce, data center impacts on communities, inflation's effect on groceries, and geopolitical influences on energy prices. You will also cover business personalities, consumer trends, real estate, and other innovations. Your work will involve research, writing, pitching, interviewing, and regular fast-turnaround original reporting. Travel assignments may be pitched but are not required.

This role requires a Wednesday-Sunday schedule and reports to the Senior Weekend Editor on the Business News team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Taking assignments from editors.
  • Pitching story ideas, including original reporting.
  • Sourcing up on assigned beats.
  • Researching and conducting interviews.
  • Covering breaking news.
  • Updating existing coverage with new developments.

The Ideal Candidate Has:

  • An interest in covering compelling news from the world’s biggest companies, including their rivalries and controversies.
  • A keen eye for impactful, market-moving corporate news and employee reactions.
  • A broad knowledge base spanning multiple industries and company types.
  • A fundamental understanding of how corporations conduct business and grow.
  • A nose for identifying unusual or out-of-the-ordinary developments.
  • A willingness to conduct cold outreach and quick interviews to advance news.
  • Speed, close attention to detail and accuracy, and clean copy.
  • Experience with original reporting and writing (school publications are welcome).

Additionally, all editorial fellows should have:

  • A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits.
  • Familiarity with digital and social media.
  • The ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team.
  • Proofreading and copyediting skills.
  • A love for Business Insider and our mission to serve readers with accurate, fair, fast, and fun information and inspiration.

Salary & Benefits

  • Fellows are paid $23 per hour (overtime when needed and approved).
  • Paid time off (PTO) and paid holidays.
