✨ AI Insights & Summary
Texture is revolutionizing the energy grid with its innovative operating system, tackling the complex challenges of modernizing infrastructure designed for a bygone era. This Staff Forward-Deployed Engineer role offers an unparalleled opportunity to be at the forefront of this transformation, working directly with electric utilities and hardware manufacturers. You'll be instrumental in integrating diverse data sources, building critical software features, and acting as the technical bridge between Texture and its clients. If you thrive on solving complex problems, enjoy end-to-end software ownership, and possess exceptional communication skills to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences, this is a chance to shape the future of energy infrastructure.
About Texture
Texture is building the operating system for the energy grid, addressing the limitations of legacy infrastructure with a modern data and software layer. We empower utilities to manage real-time operations, integrate distributed energy resources, and break down data silos.
What This Role Entails:
As a Staff Forward-Deployed Engineer, you will be embedded with a small group of customers (electric utilities and energy hardware manufacturers), managing 3-5 concurrent accounts. Travel will involve roughly one multi-day site visit per month on average.
Key Responsibilities:
- Customer Operations: Join client operations teams, understand customer needs, and lead technical discussions.
- End-to-End Software Ownership: Own integration work, build features like energy accounting and demand-response programs, and develop data pipelines. Design reference architectures for new solutions that can be templated for future customers.
- Technical Assessment: Serve as the technical expert for new business opportunities, analyzing unfamiliar data classes and determining Texture's integration capabilities.
- Cross-Functional Communication: Translate complex technical concepts into clear explanations for non-technical utility customers.
- Production Ownership: Ship production code and share on-call responsibilities for built systems.
Your First 90 Days:
- Become proficient in Texture's platform and architecture, understanding utility and OEM customer realities.
- Engage directly with customer technical teams and drive outcomes.
- Begin developing your first reference-architecture project for a new data class.
Who We're Looking For:
- Extensive Engineering Experience: 10+ years of shipping impactful systems; understanding of production-readiness.
- Independent Operator: Comfortable with ambiguity and making sound decisions without direct oversight.
- Strong Communicator: Exceptional ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Broad Technical Skills: Experience across the stack (backend integration, DevOps, data engineering, data science) is a plus, but judgment and learning agility are prioritized.
- Energy Grid Curiosity: A desire to learn about the energy sector and related concepts.
Prior forward-deployed, solutions-engineering, or consulting experience is a plus but not required. Many successful engineers at Texture transitioned into this role without prior specific experience.
Our Stack:
TypeScript, React, Go, Kafka, GraphQL federation, AWS, TimescaleDB. We prioritize engineering judgment and cross-stack thinking over specific language proficiency.
Compensation & Logistics:
- Annual Base Salary: $225,000 – $245,000
- Equity: 0.08 – 0.12% common stock options
- Benefits: Medical, dental, vision (covered), 401(k), flexible PTO
- Location: Remote-first (preference for candidates in/near NYC, but not required)
- Reports To: Victor Quinn, Co-founder and CTO
How to Apply:
Submit a resume, LinkedIn profile, and a 200-word answer to: "Describe a time you explained a technical system to a non-technical customer or stakeholder, and what you changed about your explanation when it wasn’t landing."
Texture is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion. Reasonable accommodations are available upon request.
