Job Summary
The Manager, AV Incident Management is responsible for leading the incident management function within the Systems Risk Management team. This role owns the end-to-end incident response process for our autonomous vehicle operations, ensuring all incidents are identified, managed, and closed accurately, timely, and defensibly for regulators and partners. As May Mobility scales its fleet and moves towards continuous autonomous operations, this role provides the senior leadership and operational expertise necessary to mature our incident management capabilities in line with growth. The individual will develop and maintain the processes, standards, and team structures essential for safe operations and a credible safety case.
Essential Responsibilities
- Lead and continuously improve the incident management process across all AV operational sites, ensuring consistent, high-quality response to incidents of all severities.
- Enable and support regulatory incident reporting, including NHTSA Standing General Order requirements and applicable state-level reporting, ensuring accurate and timely submissions.
- Develop and maintain incident response standards, escalation frameworks, and operational protocols aligned with May Mobility’s safety case and risk management approach.
- Design and lead a tiered incident response team structure that scales effectively with fleet growth, utilizing full-time and contract resources for coverage and quality.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for regulators, first responders, and partners during significant incidents, coordinating response and communications with Legal and Safety leadership.
- Work cross-functionally with Safety, Engineering, Legal, and Operations to ensure incidents drive systemic improvement.
- Develop and lead the incident management team talent, establishing clear career pathways and ensuring the team has the necessary skills and capacity.
- Provide regular reporting to senior leadership on incident trends, team performance, and emerging risks.
Skills and Abilities
- Deep understanding of AV operations and the regulatory environment governing autonomous vehicle deployment in the United States.
- Proven ability to lead and make decisions under pressure, with clear judgment on escalation and regulatory reporting thresholds.
- Strong process ownership instincts; ability to design consistent systems across teams and time zones.
- Effective communicator across technical, legal, and executive audiences.
- Ability to build and develop a team from a small base, scaling proactively to meet operational demands.
- High integrity in handling sensitive operational and safety information.
Qualifications and Experience
Required Qualifications:
- 7+ years of experience in incident management, safety operations, or crisis management within an autonomous vehicle, aviation, rail, or similarly regulated industry.
- Direct experience owning regulatory incident reporting to federal or state transportation authorities.
- Demonstrated experience designing and implementing escalation structures and on-call coverage models for 24/7 operations.
- Proven track record working across Safety, Engineering, Legal, and Operations functions at a senior level.
- Experience building and leading small, high-performing teams in a fast-paced operational environment.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience at an AV company that has operated or launched driverless commercial service.
- Background in first responder coordination and external communications during major incidents.
- Familiarity with safety case frameworks and risk-based assessment methodologies.
- Prior military experience (Special Operations, Officer Command) or equivalent Federal/State Government experience.
